38. Pornography
The New York Times Magazine: It ran a cover story
on May 18 called "Naked Capitalists: There's No
Business Like Porn Business." Its thesis:
Pornography is big business--with $10 billion to
$14 billion in annual sales. The author, Frank
Rich, suggests that pornography is bigger than
any of the major league sports, perhaps bigger
than Hollywood. Porn is "no longer a sideshow to
the mainstream...it is the mainstream," he says.

42. Video Games
Girls play for an average of about 5.5
hours/week and boys average 13 hours/week.
Playing games is not limited to adolescent
boys. Recently, the Wall Street Journal
reported that several companies are now
designing video game consoles for
preschoolers. Preschoolers aged two to five
play an average of 28 minutes/day.
42
43. Video games
I had a chance to observe the effects of video games first
hand on two boys, ages eight and ten, when I babysat them
earlier in the semester. They were playing the video game
"Mario Cart," which is really not a very violent game; the
object is to win a car race by coming in first while
maneuvering through different courses. When the younger
brother won, the older brother got up and started kicking
him and yelling insults! Later on that day, the younger
brother was playing another video game by himself and
when he could not beat the level, he threw down the
controller and screamed at the t.v. screen, "Why are you
doing this to me...?!" and burst into tears. I was very
shocked by this reaction and was not quite sure how to
handle the situation. This game had brought an eight year
old boy to tears, right in front of me
43
44. Video Games
Teens who play violent video games for extended
periods of time:
Tend to be more aggressive
Are more prone to confrontation with their
teachers
May engage in fights with their peers
See a decline in school achievements. (Gentile et
al, 2004).
44
46. Video Games
Gentile & Anderson (2003) state that playing
video games may increase aggressive
behaviour because violent acts are
continually repeated throughout the video
game. This method of repetition has long
been considered an effective teaching
method in reinforcing learning patterns.
46
47. Video Games
64 percent of the characters in video games
are males. In addition to this blurred reality,
the women are portrayed with ultra-thin,
"ideal" bodies and men with over-the-top
defined muscles. These stereotypes can give
your child the wrong message about what the
rest of the world looks like.

53. Video Games
Effect on Brain
"Heart rate can be altered by electrical signals from
emotional centers in the brain or by signals from the
chemical messengers called epinephrine (adrenaline) and
norepinephrine. These hormones are released from the
adrenal glands in response to danger..." (7). Multiple studies
have reported that playing video games can significantly
increase heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen
consumption. If studies show that heart rate is increased
when playing video games, then it seems that the brain is
responding to the video game as if the body is in real
danger. Does repeated exposure to this "false" sense of
danger have an effect on what the brain then perceives as
real danger?

55. Video Games
The Guy Game is a trivia game, with sex appeal. A video is shown
to the player where a host goes around asking various questions
to various girls on spring break, and you must guess not only the
correct answer but also what the girl will answer (or depending
on the round, simply whether or not she gets the question right).
Whenever the girls get a question wrong, they show their
breasts, and while they start out totally obscured by a "The Guy
Game" logo, as the player's score increases, it slowly reduces the
amount of censoring, moving on to pixelization, and eventually
become totally uncensored. The game became infamous when it
became banned in the United States after it was revealed that
one of the girls in the video was underage when it was filmed,
despite the legal waivers she had to sign stating otherwise.
Because she wasn't at least 18, technically The Guy Game is
classified as child pornography under American law.

. If you severely limit a child or teen’s Internet use, they might rebel and go to excess. But you should monitor computer use, supervise computer activity, and get your child help if he or she needs it. If your child or teen is showing signs of Internet addiction, there are things that you can do to help:
Get your child out from behind the computer screen. Expose kids to other hobbies and activities, such as team sports, Scouts, and afterschool clubs.
Restrict the use of computers, iPads, or smart phones to a common area of the house where you can keep an eye on your child's online activity, and limit time online. This will be most effective if you as parents follow suit. If you can’t stay offline, chances are your children won’t either.
Compulsive computer use can be the sign of deeper problems. Is your child having problems fitting in? Has there been a recent major change, like a move or divorce, which is causing stress?
Teenagers often rebel against their parents but if they hear the same information from a different authority figure, they may be more inclined to listen. Try a sports coach, doctor, or respected family friend. Don’t be afraid to seek professional counseling if you are concerned about your child.
Do not put media in your children's bedrooms. Keep it in the kitchen, family room or living room?not in their bedrooms where you cannot monitor it.
Even if your children will be home without you, make sure that they obey the media rules in your house. This means telling a babysitter about the rules your children must follow or letting your older child be in charge of his or her younger siblings.
Once your kids' media limit is up, have them find something to do that is active or uses their brain. One suggestion is for each minute your kid is exposed to the media, they have to spend one minute doing something active either mentally or physically. Encourage them to read or play outside.
When you see a commercial or advertisement, think about who it is targeting, if it is successful, what makes it appealing or not, and if it is realistic. Talk to your kids about the marketing strategies so that they are aware.
Get your child out from behind the computer screen. Expose kids to other hobbies and activities, such as team sports, Scouts, and afterschool clubs.
Be able to separate fiction and fantasy from reality in the media, and use your judgment as to how things are being marketed to your children.
There are parental controls you can use. Some of these include blocking certain channels or shows with certain ratings, or taping a show and previewing it yourself before allowing your child to watch it.
Set a good example for your children. It is not OK for you to watch TV for hours if your child is only allowed to watch TV for a half hour each day
