Howard Baker was a highly influential Republican Senator from Tennessee who served from 1967 to 1985. He held several leadership positions in the Senate, including Senate Majority Leader from 1981 to 1985 and Senate Minority Leader from 1977 to 1981. Baker played a key role in investigating the Watergate scandal as a member of the Senate committee. After leaving the Senate, he served as White House Chief of Staff under President Reagan from 1987 to 1988. Later in his career, Baker served as the US Ambassador to Japan from 2001 to 2005. Baker had a long and distinguished career in public service and was widely respected on both sides of the aisle for his ability to broker compromises.
