Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) is the national statistical organization of Bangladesh responsible for collecting and disseminating official statistics. It was created in 1974 to centralized statistical data generation. BBS's vision is to be a world-class data provider of timely and authentic data. It has several wings that collect data on censuses, agriculture, industry, labor, demography and health, national accounts. BBS publishes various reports and works with national and international partners to improve statistical systems and monitor development goals in Bangladesh.

with collecting, collating, compiling data and
disseminating official statistics

5. Stories behind the creation of BBS
• After independence of Bangladesh, there were four
agencies engaged in statistical data generation,
dissemination but they were working independently
of each other. So , Bangladesh needed a centralized
statistical system .
• Thus, in 1974, the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics
(BBS) was created.

Vision of BBS
The vision: a world-class data provider of authentic, relevant and
timely data in a holistic and user-friendly manner.
Mission of BBS
• To establish an integrated, professional, efficient and effective
NSS, under the guidance and leadership of the BBS.
• To produce and publish official statistics that meet the current and
growing needs of national and international users in a transparent
and timely fashion using international standards and the best
statistical practices.

3 decennial censuses are conducted:
•Population and Housing census
•Agriculture census
•Economic census

where they use “Magnetic Ink Character Reader (MICR)”

•Literary Assessment Survey (LAS) where the level of education of the population
is assessed with a competency test.

RETA of ADB has also been implementing under this wing.
ii) General Data Dissemination System: This initiative is being conducted
under the supervision of the IMF.

Demography and Health wing is responsible for compiling
and publishing statistics relating to the population of
Bangladesh and its health status.

Population”

24. Compile annual estimates of the acreage, production and yield rate of 6
major crops and 118 minor crops
The Wing also produces seasonal forecasts of the area under
cultivation and the production of major crop
