BBFC
ABIDUR RAHMAN
Who are they?
The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), before 1985 known as British
Board of Film Censors, is a non-governmental organization, founded by the
film industry in 1912 and responsible for the national classification and
censorship of films within the United Kingdom.
The BBFC certification award depends on the amount of sex/nudity, violence,
drug use and strong language included. These factors would understandably
deem viewers of a young age unsuitable to view such films. It also means that
they would not be able to purchase a DVD/Bu-Ray version of the product
once release.
Certification
There are currently 7 certifications available:
Universal – All ages are allowed to watch the film
Parental Guidance – All ages are admitted but some scenes can be
unsuitable for young children
12A – Suitable for ages above 12. However, viewers under the age of 12
have to be accompanied by an adult
12 – Only viewers 12 or over can view the film
15 – Only viewers ages 15 or over can view this film as it can contain
adult themes, hard drugs or constant foul language
18 - Only suitable for people aged 18 or older, which means adults only
Our Short Film
We have decided that our film is best suited to a 15 certification, due to the
themes addressed in it; it includes some drug abuse which in context reflects
our characters state of mind. We believe that the use of these themes are
necessary in portraying this. Our main character also has a physical
confrontation with a drug dealer at the end of the film which may be
unsuitable/slightly disturbing for young children to watch. Also the references
to the drug abuse would be inappropriate to present to children who are
unaccompanied despite it being infrequent.
As there is some serious topics included in our short film e,g the use of drugs,
strong language it would be smart to rate it a 15. However, it is infrequent
and we will not show any sex/nudity. Therefore, we would not consider Gods
Gift to a 18 rated film
