The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) is a non-profit organization focused on classifying video and film content based on age restrictions to protect children and young viewers from harmful material. Their mission includes providing parents with information about film content, reflecting social attitudes, and working with industry partners to apply age restrictions on platforms like YouTube and Vevo. The BBFC's classification system directly impacts the creation of music videos, guiding creators on content suitability for varying age groups while avoiding negative representations.

2. Introduction – What is BBFC?
BBFC stands for British Board of Film Classification which appears to be a non for
profit organisation. The company simply focuses on video and film which is followed
by age restrictions depending on the content. This is formally set through a contract
between the public, film industry and the BBFC themselves.
“Our aim is to ensure that children, and all filmgoers, are protected from harm and
illegal material” This appears to be their main aim which is addressed/ stressed in
their missions. The BBFC appear to provide parents of young children BBFCinsight on
ALL cinema films. This vitally presents information about the content of the film.

MISSIONS
As a summary, the most important mission that BBFC is maintaining is to ensure that the content that they classify at
a particular age is suitable – especially younger children due to bad representations that can have an impact on the
way they grow up in the future. This also includes working with a variety of partnerships as a way of developing and
making others aware of their services and making sure that young and vulnerable people are aware of the
organisation age restrictions.

4. Videos
Since my group are in the process of creating a music video, we will be looking at how BBFC
incorporates video regulations and how it can potentially affect our music video.
It appears that BBFC is in partnership with a variety of companies such as YouTube, Vevo, Sony Music
Group UK, Universal Music UK, Warner Music UK. The companies that BBFC are in partnership have
applied age restrictions which can now be visually seen on Youtube and Vevo. Before the BBFC puts a
classification on music videos, they consider looking at several aspects which determines what is
suitable for a particular age group. The company focuses on the following:
o Drug misuse
o Dangerous behaviour presented as safe
o Inappropriate language
o Nudity and sexual activity
o Violence and intimidating behaviour

5. BBFC CLASSIFICATION – video

Appropriate content for children at the age
of 12 and over. However, some of the
content is not suitable for children younger.
Children under the age of 15 are allowed to
watch the content marked 15 due to the
content being suitable for 15 year olds and
over to an extent
Adults are only permitted to watch the
content. Nobody under the age is allowed
due to poor representations

6. Why is it important for us?
BBFC age restrictions partly has an impact on our music video. Our music video will
be suitable for the 15 and 18 classification due to our target audience being aged
16-25. We must ensure that we are highly aware of the content that we are
submitting into our music video as well as the lyrics of our chosen song. We will be
challenged by the content that may be suitable for 18 year old restriction with the
15 year old restriction because it may not be suitable in some elements. Therefore,
we will strongly avoid negative representations to avoid any conflict between the
BBFC classifications.
