The BBFC was set up in 1912 to classify cinema films and began regulating videos/DVDs in 1984. It is funded through fees from submissions and uses age ratings as guidelines. The BBFC can restrict sales and viewing of media if ratings are broken. Case studies of A Clockwork Orange and Fight Club demonstrate the BBFC in action classifying films as 18 rated. Regulation is important to protect younger viewers but regulators should remain independent.

THEY DO THIS IN ORDER TO PROTECT THE CONSUMER. How does it work? So, record labels submit any music videos that are to be released in the UK which could potentially receive at least an age 12 rating. The BBFC then watch the video through thoroughly assessing a rating and ‘bespoke’ content advice. For example, strong language, sexual content/ references and nudity. On the YouTube smartphone app a rating is included beneath the video in a small square box to warn the consumer of what they're about to view Vevo, on the other hand, has the BBFC rating appear in the top left hand corner of the video for the first few seconds, this allows the consumer to be warned before the video gets into full swing. If the cursor is additionally moved during the video, again the age that the BBFC has rated the video appears in the same place. If consumers are unsure on the ratings, they are able to access an ’I’ icon to see more information about the ratings of their videos.
