Public Service Broadcasting Essay
Public Service Broadcasting
From the establishment of the BBC in the late 1920s, British audiences were given the opportunity
of taking part in a shared national experience and interest. Since that time, an apparent agreement
has existed as to the general aims of broadcasting by the BBC which fell under the heading "public
service broadcasting." Although the BBC no longer enjoys a broadcasting monopoly, the promise to
provide a mix of programming by which audiences may be educated as well as entertained has been
emulated by the other terrestrial broadcasters, beginning with ITV in the 1950s. However, recent
years have shown a breakdown to this widespread agreement and the term "public service
broadcasting" now seems to exist as more...show more content...
The sense of community so generated is a useful element in preserving coherence in society" (Green,
19). Throughout its history, the BBC has always been successful in providing audiences with this
sense of national cohesion through its programming and no matter how many new cable and
satellite channels arrive on the scene, this is unlikely to change. As one journalist put it, "when a
wall collapses on football fans in Brussels, people are not going to tune to Sky Channel."
Public service broadcasting, however, consists of a much larger public function to the audience
than merely covering special events or issues of national importance and from its early years the
BBC has been criticized for being unable to truly involve itself with the deeper and more diverse
levels of British society. Newspapers of the 1930s were probably getting ahead of themselves when
they declared the BBC as "typical and representative a national institution as the Bank of England:
reliable and responsible, the safe depository of the nation's cultural capital" (MacCabe, 48). No
matter what people may have liked to believe, the BBC could not but help become aware of its
general lack of engagement by the eve of the Second World War. Independent researchers were
showing as early as 1936 that the BBC was failing to reach "large sections of the people, or, at any
rate, failing to make them feel that it had much to say to them" (Green, 14). With its (mis)conception
of itself as the

The BBC Organization Essay
The BBC Organization The BBC stands for the British Broadcasting Co–operation. The British
Broadcast is a very well established organisation. It was formed in 1922 by a group of leading
wireless manufactures, the daily broadcasting by the BBC began from Marconi's London Studio on
November 14th, this followed the next day by broadcasts from Birmingham and Manchester. During
the following few months the BBC organisation was successfully able to broadcast around the U.K
this effectively showed how popular and in demand the BBC became around the U.K and therefore
had to remain a prestigious and impressive organisation and to remain its high standards and
popularity. The Secretary of State's...show more content...
To maintain a degree of independence from the state of the governing administration was to
appoint a committee of 12 public figures on a five yearly basis who would, in turn, appoint a
director general. The extent to which these committees were composed of 'political appointees'
who could steer the BBC in directions favourable to the government has been a subject of
controversy . So has the BBC's real 'independence' in light of the government's power to set
licence fees and therefore apply financial pressure in the event of unfavourable or controversial
political coverage. Under its first director John Reith the BBC was given a mission to bring the
'Best' of British culture to the nation, to enlighten, elevate and 'educate' wherever possible. The
BBC is formally obliged to remain politically impartial especially in times of political conflict.
The governors role is to ensure that the BBC fulfils its obligations as laid down by the law by
remaining an impartial and politically correct organisation. The BBC is set up by the Royal Charter
therefore programmes on war, Remembrance services, Queen's speeches are broadcast to remain as
a high well respected

Basal Cell Carcinoma Skin Cancer is the most common type of cancer. Among the three types of
skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma (or BCC) is the most frequently occurring type of skin cancer.
BCC is a type of skin cancer that "begins in the basal cells, which are a type of cells within the
skin that produce new skin cells as old ones die off" (Skincancer.org). BCCs are abnormal,
uncontrollable growths of new skin cells that result in red and pink spots, lesions, and scars. The
major cause of BCC is sun exposure. Both long–term exposure over a course of a lifetime, and
intense exposure over short periods of time, combine to cause damage that can lead to BCC. Due
to sun exposure being the major cause of BCC, almost all of BCCs occur in sun exposed...show more

There are two types of drugs, and four types of surgeries. Possible types of surgeries include
Freezing, Mohs surgery, Surgical Excision, and Electrodesiccation and curettage (ED&C).
Possible types of drugs include Topical treatments, and Medication for advanced cancer. Freezing
involves "killing cancerous cells by freezing them with liquid nitrogen" (mayoclinic.org). Mohs
surgery involves the doctor "removing cancer cells layer by layer", and "examining each layer
under microscope until no cancer cells remain" (mayoclinic.org). Surgical Excision involves the
doctor cutting out the cancerous lesion and some healthy surrounding skin. ED&C involves
"removing the surface of the skin cancer, and then searing the base of the cancer with an electric
needle to control bleeding and kill cancer cells" (mayoclinic.org).Topical treatments include
imiquimod, and fluorouracil and are applied to the affected area for several weeks. Medication
for advanced cancer is used only on metastatic BCC and includes medications such as vismodegib,
or sonidegib, which block molecular signals that enable BCCs to continue growing. As stated
above, BCC is mainly caused by direct exposure to the sun. To prevent skin cancer, one should try
to avoid direct prolonged hours in the sun. Also, when at the beach, pool, or working outside for
long periods of time, one should use sunscreen. Covering up your skin by finding shade, or
bringing an umbrella works as well. Avoiding burns and tanning are also a huge factor of preventing
BCC as they lead to long term skin

BBC News
The BBC news is a British public broadcasting aimed to show the world the real truth and different
types of news. It covers news on many areas of the technology world; topics range from internet
security issues to gaming reviews, there is a lean toward coverage relevant to a UK audience,
believing that all should have the right to know and share knowledge as this quote I took from the
site: "The BBC sees its audience as citizens who have the right to independent and impartial
information.
Since it is a news service it has different updated internal and external links to facts represented as

Bbc 3's Online Move
I am going to talk about the newspaper article 'The Guardian' about BBC Three's online move,
which is approached by the BBC Trust in a move to save the company ВЈ30m a year. They will
spend money on documentaries such as Life and Death Row and long–form– comedy shows like
Bad Education and Cuckoo, as an alternative of lighter formats such as Snog, Marry and Avoid.
However, this will have an outcome on the audience because they will drop spectators. My research
shows that BBC Three is currently watched by 11.2 million people every week and it reaches 25%
of 16–24 year olds.
Moreover, it is currently the only BBC channel watched by 925,000 people in that age group and
80% of which are expected to be absent to the BBC with the closure. This suggests...show more

Therefore, they would go online to watch the videos and there are less number of audiences watching
television than they used to. Especially, if they are behind in watching a soap opera, they might
catch up in their free time. However, most soaps are generally online and people can watch it when
they want instead of waiting a certain time, which is not helpful for them.
Overall, this has a knock on effect on the number of people watching TV on BBC. Especially,
because they rely on the number of views and not the advertising. Therefore, it suggests that due to
the firm changing pace of ICT. This has meant that companies should rely on adverts as well as put
things online to have a higher number of audience.
However, the closure of the channel will save about ВЈ30m a year and would save money for BBC1.
This means that additional viewers will switch to watching BBC 1 and relying on better production
and would use the internet. This is because teenagers these days rely on downloading apps and
watching BBC I player. Therefore, BBC are trying to put better content online to ensure they have
high views. According to my research BBC believe it will allow them to innovate with new ideas
and new forms of content for younger

Bbc Narrative
The Ardennes Forest was alive during the peak of summer. The birds were chirping, wind was
passing through the leaves, and race cars were roaring through Eau Rouge. It was the middle of
July and temperatures soared into triple digits. The sun was beaming down on the magnificent
Spa Francorchamps circuit, and it was a perfect day to go racing. This round in Belgium was the
only round of the BRDC British F3 Championship not held in England, and I was looking to
capitalize on this chance to make my move to the front of the field. Thus far, the season had been
difficult with high ambitions turning into lost prospects and great frustration. However, this
weekend was different: there was a whiff of opportunity in the air. I arrived at the circuit Saturday
morning with a positive attitude following some productive practice sessions the day before.
Qualifying hadn't gone to plan, with my position being seventeenth due to the lack of drafting I
had done on my best lap. Despite this, the engineers set the car up in race trim, and the stage was
set for an almighty fight to the front. The car roared into life, growling and snatching at the road
eager to get going . I drove out of the paddock and began to warm my tires. I rounded the final
corner, pulled onto the grid, and began to focus on the lights. Everything goes silent. The engine revs
build until every car is at maximum throttle, and the green light is shown....show more content...
For three agonizing laps, we were behind the safety car, weaving left and right in attempts to
keep our tires warm. Then, the radio channel opens and my engineer says, "safety is coming in at
the end of this lap". We pull onto the short front straight and the engine revs rise once again as the
green flag waves. Immediately, there was smoke again; two more cars had a minor collision, and all
of a sudden I find myself sitting in 7th place! Now, the race was

BBC News Assignment
Name: Shyra RahmanClass: 7–502
Choose a news organization's website (e.g. nytimes.com, cnn.com). Give as much information as
possible in each area, using the questions as prompts but addressing anything related to the topic.
Choose another website related to an activity or topic you enjoy. Complete the worksheet again.
My website: http://www.bbc.com/news (BBC News)
Content: What types of content are covered? Is there anything important missing? Is content
balanced in the way it should be (when audience is taken into consideration)? Is there a balance of
briefs and in–depth articles?
BBC News covers a wide range of topics. Some examples are news about politics, war events, world
news, entertainment, business, health,...show more content...
Though it may be from another topic, the related articles are helpful. Otherwise, it is fairly easy to
find a specific article using the search feature.
Professionalism: Are bylines easy to find? Do captions contain all the necessary information? Are
there typos? Does the site look clean and polished and trustworthy?
There are no bylines in BBC News. There is only the date and category. However, captions do tell
all necessary information. I was able to know what to expect of all articles. In addition, spelling is
correct, though punctuation is not always accurate. For example, commas are frequently used
incorrectly. Additionally, the site does look clean and polished for most of the time. On the other
hand, the advertisements do throw off the websites professionalism. Also, because there is no author
or sites used for the articles, I do not know whether the articles are trustworthy.
Creativity: In what ways does the website show creativity? Are there cartoons, illustrations, graphics,
etc. to aid in storytelling?
The website uses videos, pictures, along with words to show creativity. For instance, some
articles use videos to tell the story, along with a short little blurb on what the video is about. Also,
there is a whole separate section of the website for pictures. It is called "In Pictures" and generally
each "article" is a slideshow of pictures in a week. The videos also discuss many different affairs,
which provides audiences choices.

Newspapers of the 1930s were probably getting ahead of themselves when they declared the BBC as "typical and representative a national institution as the Bank of England: reliable and responsible, the safe depository of the nation's cultural capital" (MacCabe, 48). No matter what people may have liked to believe, the BBC could not but help become aware of its general lack of engagement by the eve of the Second World War. Independent researchers were showing as early as 1936 that the BBC was failing to reach "large sections of the people, or, at any rate, failing to make them feel that it had much to say to them" (Green, 14). • 3. The BBC Organization Essay The BBC Organization The BBC stands for the British Broadcasting Co–operation. The British Broadcast is a very well established organisation. It was formed in 1922 by a group of leading wireless manufactures, the daily broadcasting by the BBC began from Marconi's London Studio on November 14th, this followed the next day by broadcasts from Birmingham and Manchester. During the following few months the BBC organisation was successfully able to broadcast around the U.K this effectively showed how popular and in demand the BBC became around the U.K and therefore had to remain a prestigious and impressive organisation and to remain its high standards and popularity. To maintain a degree of independence from the state of the governing administration was to appoint a committee of 12 public figures on a five yearly basis who would, in turn, appoint a director general. The extent to which these committees were composed of 'political appointees' who could steer the BBC in directions favourable to the government has been a subject of controversy . So has the BBC's real 'independence' in light of the government's power to set licence fees and therefore apply financial pressure in the event of unfavourable or controversial political coverage. Under its first director John Reith the BBC was given a mission to bring the 'Best' of British culture to the nation, to enlighten, elevate and 'educate' wherever possible. The BBC is formally obliged to remain politically impartial especially in times of political conflict. The governors role is to ensure that the BBC fulfils its obligations as laid down by the law by remaining an impartial and politically correct organisation. The BBC is set up by the Royal Charter therefore programmes on war, Remembrance services, Queen's speeches are broadcast to remain as a high well respected Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Bbc Research Papers Basal Cell Carcinoma Skin Cancer is the most common type of cancer. Among the three types of skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma (or BCC) is the most frequently occurring type of skin cancer. BCC is a type of skin cancer that "begins in the basal cells, which are a type of cells within the skin that produce new skin cells as old ones die off" (Skincancer.org). BCCs are abnormal, uncontrollable growths of new skin cells that result in red and pink spots, lesions, and scars. The major cause of BCC is sun exposure. Both long–term exposure over a course of a lifetime, and intense exposure over short periods of time, combine to cause damage that can lead to BCC. Due to sun exposure being the major cause of BCC, almost all of BCCs occur in sun exposed...show more content... There are two types of drugs, and four types of surgeries. Possible types of surgeries include Freezing, Mohs surgery, Surgical Excision, and Electrodesiccation and curettage (ED&C). Possible types of drugs include Topical treatments, and Medication for advanced cancer. Freezing involves "killing cancerous cells by freezing them with liquid nitrogen" (mayoclinic.org). Mohs surgery involves the doctor "removing cancer cells layer by layer", and "examining each layer under microscope until no cancer cells remain" (mayoclinic.org). Surgical Excision involves the doctor cutting out the cancerous lesion and some healthy surrounding skin. ED&C involves "removing the surface of the skin cancer, and then searing the base of the cancer with an electric needle to control bleeding and kill cancer cells" (mayoclinic.org).Topical treatments include imiquimod, and fluorouracil and are applied to the affected area for several weeks. Medication for advanced cancer is used only on metastatic BCC and includes medications such as vismodegib, or sonidegib, which block molecular signals that enable BCCs to continue growing. As stated above, BCC is mainly caused by direct exposure to the sun. To prevent skin cancer, one should try to avoid direct prolonged hours in the sun. Also, when at the beach, pool, or working outside for long periods of time, one should use sunscreen. Covering up your skin by finding shade, or bringing an umbrella works as well. Avoiding burns and tanning are also a huge factor of preventing BCC as they lead to long term skin Get more content on HelpWriting.net

It covers news on many areas of the technology world; topics range from internet security issues to gaming reviews, there is a lean toward coverage relevant to a UK audience, believing that all should have the right to know and share knowledge as this quote I took from the site: "The BBC sees its audience as citizens who have the right to independent and impartial information. • 6. Bbc 3's Online Move I am going to talk about the newspaper article 'The Guardian' about BBC Three's online move, which is approached by the BBC Trust in a move to save the company ВЈ30m a year. They will spend money on documentaries such as Life and Death Row and long–form– comedy shows like Bad Education and Cuckoo, as an alternative of lighter formats such as Snog, Marry and Avoid. However, this will have an outcome on the audience because they will drop spectators. My research shows that BBC Three is currently watched by 11.2 million people every week and it reaches 25% of 16–24 year olds. Moreover, it is currently the only BBC channel watched by 925,000 people in that age group and 80% of which are expected to be absent to the BBC with the closure. This suggests...show more content... Therefore, they would go online to watch the videos and there are less number of audiences watching television than they used to. Especially, if they are behind in watching a soap opera, they might catch up in their free time. However, most soaps are generally online and people can watch it when they want instead of waiting a certain time, which is not helpful for them. Overall, this has a knock on effect on the number of people watching TV on BBC. Especially, because they rely on the number of views and not the advertising. Therefore, it suggests that due to the firm changing pace of ICT. This has meant that companies should rely on adverts as well as put things online to have a higher number of audience. However, the closure of the channel will save about ВЈ30m a year and would save money for BBC1. This means that additional viewers will switch to watching BBC 1 and relying on better production and would use the internet. This is because teenagers these days rely on downloading apps and watching BBC I player. Therefore, BBC are trying to put better content online to ensure they have high views. • 7. Bbc Narrative The Ardennes Forest was alive during the peak of summer. The birds were chirping, wind was passing through the leaves, and race cars were roaring through Eau Rouge. It was the middle of July and temperatures soared into triple digits. The sun was beaming down on the magnificent Spa Francorchamps circuit, and it was a perfect day to go racing. This round in Belgium was the only round of the BRDC British F3 Championship not held in England, and I was looking to capitalize on this chance to make my move to the front of the field. Thus far, the season had been difficult with high ambitions turning into lost prospects and great frustration. However, this weekend was different: there was a whiff of opportunity in the air. I arrived at the circuit Saturday morning with a positive attitude following some productive practice sessions the day before. Qualifying hadn't gone to plan, with my position being seventeenth due to the lack of drafting I had done on my best lap. Despite this, the engineers set the car up in race trim, and the stage was set for an almighty fight to the front. The car roared into life, growling and snatching at the road eager to get going . I drove out of the paddock and began to warm my tires. I rounded the final corner, pulled onto the grid, and began to focus on the lights. Everything goes silent. The engine revs build until every car is at maximum throttle, and the green light is shown....show more content... For three agonizing laps, we were behind the safety car, weaving left and right in attempts to keep our tires warm. Then, the radio channel opens and my engineer says, "safety is coming in at the end of this lap". We pull onto the short front straight and the engine revs rise once again as the green flag waves. Immediately, there was smoke again; two more cars had a minor collision, and all of a sudden I find myself sitting in 7th place! Now, the race was Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. BBC News Assignment Name: Shyra RahmanClass: 7–502 Choose a news organization's website (e.g. nytimes.com, cnn.com). Give as much information as possible in each area, using the questions as prompts but addressing anything related to the topic. Choose another website related to an activity or topic you enjoy. Complete the worksheet again. My website: http://www.bbc.com/news (BBC News) Content: What types of content are covered? Is there anything important missing? Is content balanced in the way it should be (when audience is taken into consideration)? Is there a balance of briefs and in–depth articles? BBC News covers a wide range of topics. Some examples are news about politics, war events, world news, entertainment, business, health,...show more content... Though it may be from another topic, the related articles are helpful. Otherwise, it is fairly easy to find a specific article using the search feature. Professionalism: Are bylines easy to find? Do captions contain all the necessary information? Are there typos? Does the site look clean and polished and trustworthy? There are no bylines in BBC News. There is only the date and category. However, captions do tell all necessary information. I was able to know what to expect of all articles. In addition, spelling is correct, though punctuation is not always accurate. For example, commas are frequently used incorrectly. Additionally, the site does look clean and polished for most of the time. On the other hand, the advertisements do throw off the websites professionalism. Also, because there is no author or sites used for the articles, I do not know whether the articles are trustworthy. Creativity: In what ways does the website show creativity? Are there cartoons, illustrations, graphics, etc. to aid in storytelling? The website uses videos, pictures, along with words to show creativity. For instance, some articles use videos to tell the story, along with a short little blurb on what the video is about. Also, there is a whole separate section of the website for pictures. It is called "In Pictures" and generally each "article" is a slideshow of pictures in a week. The videos also discuss many different affairs, which provides audiences choices.
