Walter Gropius founded the Bauhaus School in Germany in 1919 with the goal of combining art, craft, and technology. The Bauhaus building in Dessau exemplified the school's principles of minimalism, functionality, and use of new materials like glass and steel. It featured three facades of glass, a steel frame structure, and minimal ornamentation to focus on form following function. The building was iconic in establishing the International Style that came to define early modern architecture.
