Batteries can be charged and discharged. When charging, energy from a power source is absorbed by the battery. When discharging, the stored energy is released as an electric current to power devices. Batteries store chemical potential energy that is converted to electrical energy during discharge and electrical energy that is converted back to chemical potential energy during charging.
