Workplace
Etiquette
Today’s Workshop
1) Day one prep
2) The first few months
3) Part of the tribe
First Impressions…
• Recruiters can spend as little as just
six seconds scanning a CV
• Even a great CV will be ignored if it
has grammar or spelling errors
• Communication:
55% visual
38% tone of voice
7% the words you speak
• Tailor your CV and covering letter
to the job
• Proofread
• Give thought to all three
TASK ONE: DAY ONE PREP
Task One Summary
Do your research:
1. Working hours
2. Travel plan
3. Be early
4. Find out the dress code
5. If in doubt, always go smart
6. Grooming matters
7. Food
PART TWO: THE FIRST FEW MONTHS
“ The palest ink is more reliable
than the most powerful memory”
Ancient Chinese Proverb
Getting it right
1. In meetings, make (lots of) notes!
2. Listen and learn
3. Ask (lots of) questions
4. Constantly keep checking back with your team/boss…
• When you are asked to do something
• Whilst you're doing it
• When it’s finished
5. Be social: tea and coffee matters
6. …so does time keeping
PART THREE: PART OF THE TRIBE
“I can do things you cannot,
you can do things I cannot,
together we can do great things.”
Mother Theresa
Fitting In/Standing Out
1. Keep a sense of ‘You’ – teams need different skills and people
2. Show enthusiasm and willingness
3. Ask for feedback (and listen to it)
4. If things go wrong, be truthful, deal with it straight away
5. Mirror the habits of people you admire professionally
6. Listen and make eye contact
7. Have good manners
The Boss
When your new boss talks to you:
• Be sure you know what’s been asked of you: check back
• If you don’t understand, ask
“Can you explain it to me another way please”
When you are doing the talking …
• Think: what’s your specific message or question
• Self-edit, know what you're going to say: speak with clarity
