HISTORY
• Created by Dr. James Naismith in 1981
• Indoor sports game to help athletes keep in shape in
cold weather
• Started in America and then to the ROW (Rest of the
World)
• Objective: To throw the basketball into the fruit baskets
nailed to the lower railing of the gym balcony
• There were only 13 rules of basketball with five basic
ideas
RULES & REGULATIONS
• An attempt to score is called a SHOT
• Successful shot is worth 2 points, or 3 points
• 1 point shot is earned when shooting from foul line after a foul is made
• Played in 4 quarters of 10 (FIBA) or 12 minutes (NBA)
• Overtime- 5 minutes
• Time allowed is actual playing time (clock is stopped while play is not
active)
• A game typically takes 2 hours
• Teams exchange baskets for the second half

VIOLATIONS
• Ball must stay within the court
• The ball may not be kicked, nor be struck with the fist
• Goaltending is a defender's touching of a ball that is on a downward
flight toward the basket
• There are limits imposed on the time taken before progressing the ball
past halfway
• There are limits placed on the steps a player may take without dribbling,
which commonly results in an infraction known as traveling.
• Within a dribble, the player cannot carry the ball by placing his hand on
the bottom of the ball; doing so is known as carrying the ball.
• NOTE: A violation of these rules results in loss of possession.
FOULS
• Personal Foul:
An attempt to unfairly disadvantage an opponent through certain types of
physical contact is illegal and is called a personal foul.
• Technical Fouls:
They may be charged for various rules violations including failure to
properly record a player in the scorebook, or for unsportsmanlike conduct.
