Basketball is a team sport played indoors where two teams of five players each try to score points by throwing a ball through a hoop. James Naismith invented basketball in 1891 with two teams of nine players using peach baskets and an ordinary soccer ball. The game has since evolved with professional leagues forming, set rules on movement and scoring, and international competitions. Basketball is now one of the most popular sports worldwide played on a rectangular court with goals at each end.
