1. BASIC SEO TERMS FOR
MARKETERS

2. DOMAIN
•This is the main address of your website on the
World Wide Web.
•Older domains are favoured by Search Engines
during ranking. So it’s best to register/renew your
domain’s ownership for a couple of years, as
renewals later can be more expensive.
•You can easily buy a domain on GoDaddy.com
•Example: www.yourdomainname.com
3. URL
•This is the exact address of a particular page
on your website.
•Example:
www.yourdomainname.com/contact-us
5. HTML
•HTML stands for Hyper Text Markup Language.
•The code of your website is written in this
language.
•This is what the Search Engine Reads, so it is
advised to have a clean and organised code.
6. CSS
• CSS stands for Cascading Style Sheets.
• This is a code part of the website that defines
how your site looks, including headers, footers,
layout, links etc.
7. TITLE TAG
•This describes the title of a particular page on
your website.
•This is the description that is visible to users
upon search.
•It’s a good idea to keep this short and clear. It
should be between 50-65 characters.
8. DESCRIPTION
TAG
•This is a longer description about the contents of
a page.
•It should be between 150-165 characters.
9. HEADINGS
•These are various Headings that you would use
to organise and present the content on your
website.
•You may highlight it visually by making it Bold.
10. ALT TEXT/ALT
TAG
•Search engines cannot read images and read
text instead.
•Alternative Text is the description of an Image, to
be read by the search engine.
11. ANCHOR TEXT
•This is the text that links to another webpage.
Upon clicking this, a user will be taken to another
webpage.
•The text of this link helps the search engines to
understand what the content of the other
webpage may be about.
12. PAGE TITLE
•This is the title of a page on your website.
•This title appears upon hovering, at the top of
the browser window.
•Including Keywords in this description is very
helpful.
13. KEYWORDS
•These are the words that a user enters in the
search box to find info about a product or service
that your business offers.
•This is probably the most important thing to
know with regards to SEO.
•Doing proper research and using appropriate
tools for keyword research is the first step
towards SEO.
14. LONG TAIL
KEYWORDS
•These can be thought of as 3-4 word phrases
that are input into the search tab by users, while
looking for a product or service.
•Finding Long Tail Keywords appropriate for your
business can be really helpful for SEO and help
you rank faster than Short Keywords.
15. LINK BUILDING
•This is an activity done for SEO, that includes
getting more inbound links to your site.
•This helps in ranking higher in search.
16. INTERNAL
LINKS
•These are the links between the multiple pages
of a website.
•If done correctly, along with valuable relevant
content, this can make a big difference to your
search ranking.
17. BACKLINKS OR
INBOUND LINKS
•These are the links from other websites that
direct the users to your website.
•Good quality of backlinks indicates that users
are finding relevant content on your website
hence increasing your ranking.
18. INDEXED PAGES
•These are the pages that have been crawled
and indexed by the search engines.
•A quick way to find out when your page was last
‘indexed’ by Google is by typing
cache:www.yourdomain.com in the search bar
and noting when was it last crawled.
19. PPC
•Pay per click advertising method for digital ads.
•Using this, the advertisers pay for the number of
clicks an ad generates for their site.
20. SERP
•SERP stands for Search Engine Ranking Page
•This refers to the page on which your website
appears, when users search for a particular term.
•Each search results page has about 10 results,
depending on the browser being used.
21. TRAFFIC
•The number of people coming to your website.
•You can find this out using a tool called Alexa.
