Punjab, a state bordering Pakistan, is the heart of India’s Sikh community. The city of Amritsar, founded in the 1570s by Sikh Guru Ram Das, is the site of Harmandir Sahib, the holiest gurdwara (Sikh place of worship). Known in English as the Golden Temple, and surrounded by the Pool of Nectar, it's a major pilgrimage site. Also in Amritsar is Durgiana Temple, a Hindu shrine famed for its engraved silver doors.

• Punj means (five) and aab means
(water), so Punjab means land of
five waters.
• These five rivers named Beas,
Satluj, Ravi, Chenab and Jhelum.

After the partition of India in 1947,
the Punjab province of British India was divided
between India and Pakistan. The
Indian Punjab was divided on the basis of language
in 1966. It was divided into 3 parts.

Punjab extends from the latitudes 29.30° N to 32.32° N
and Longitudes 73.55° E to 76.50° E.
Due to the presence of a large number of rivers, most of
the Punjab is a fertile plain.

elected from 117 single-seat constituencies.

elected representative from each seat is called as MP

authority) of Sikhism, three are in Punjab. These are
Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Damdama Sahib and Anandpur
Sahib.
