This document provides a summary of the key findings from a baseline study on building public and political will for agriculture development in Germany. It discusses the state of research on agriculture for food security and nutrition. It notes that while smallholder farmers produce much of the world's food, their work and knowledge remains understudied and under-supported by policies. Effective agricultural development requires integrating smallholders' indigenous knowledge with modern technologies through participatory research that addresses their needs and production environments. Overall agricultural productivity and food security are improved when smallholder farmers are integrated into local and regional markets.
