Description:
This landmark building contains offices, workshops
on the upper floors and exhibition and retail units
on the ground floor fronting Marylebone Road,
remained open for business during the works. The
Victorian façade is comprised primarily of brickwork
with stucco dressings and mouldings.
Barwin undertook the refurbishment of this
building with the aid and support of the Madame
Tussauds in-house maintenance team, which
included specialist decoration and cleaning, paint
stripping and brick/stone repairs, roofing and
internal repairs.
Scope of works:
Phase one: external restoration of the front façade.
Phase two: roofing repairs to stop historical leaks in
the building and improve the longevity of the roofs.
Phase three: new store room – joinery, plumbing,
stud walls, new ceilings and fireproofing works.
Phase four: internal works in Glitter ball area.
Redesign of main display area including structural
repair works to ceiling, stud walls, decorating, false
flooring, fire proofing.

residential addresses in Chelsea.

Description:
Barwin were appointed by Chorus Group on behalf of Cadogan
Estates to undertake stone and brick façade repairs and cleaning by
means of the DOFF system to this period residential property in
Chelsea. This prestigious building consists of 10 exclusive
apartments and it is also a home to Jo Malone, Montblanc and
Chloé luxury retailers. The main challenge of this project was to
cause minimal disruption to the retail units below whilst façade
cleaning and restoration works were carried out.
Barwin carried out replacement of Bath stone string course units to
the chimney stacks and insitu repairs to existing masonry features
and bands. We also replaced 4 bays of bottle balustrades. These
reconstituted stone units were copied from existing elements and
installed on site to complete the new look of the front façade.

Barwin have just completed restoration of the Grade II Listed
Buckingham Gates, as well as gate lodge, gate piers and railings, located
at the junction of Birdcage Walk and Buckingham Palace rond point
approach. Barwin began the restoration of the Buckingham Gates in
February. Buckingham Gates comprise two sets of identical cast iron
gates, piers and stone lodge. It was designed in 1900-01, by Sir Aston
Webb.
Scope of works:
Removal of vehicle gates to a secure location; grit blasting to remove
coatings; gate repairs; redecoration to Hempel paint specification and
reinstalling the gates
Grit blasting of the pedestrian gates on site to remove coatings; metal
and stone repairs, redecoration to Hempel paint specification
DOFF & TORC cleaning of Portland stone piers and Buckingham Gates

Description:
Built in the early -20th century, the library is a red brick and Bath
stone building with classical ornamental and decorative stone
features.
Barwin were instructed to undertake extensive brick repairs and
restoration of all decorative stonework. We undertook several
extensive restoration surveys and various brick matching exercises
and found a sympathetic restoration method to ensure the historic
fabric of the building was saved. Barwin commissioned a local brick
factory to create new moulded bricks and provided several red brick
samples. All decayed decorative and flat stonework was restored
using reconstituted stone mortar; defective moulded and flat bricks
were replaced and re-pointed. In addition to restoration we were
also enlisted to install new structural steels, which required a large
amount of propping and engineering input.

Description:
Sea Life Centre was built in 1872 as Brighton
Aquarium, designed by Eugenius Birch, the architect
responsible for the West Pier. It was extensively
reconstructed between 1927 and 1929, the Italianate
features of Birch’s design were replaced by a
neoclassical style.
Barwin were appointed to carry out testing and
analysis of over 1500 sq. m of concrete soffit, after
reporting the test results to the engineer, we were
instructed to cut back 1230 sq. m of concrete soffit,
to remove all the original reinforcement and replace
it with resin bonded new reinforcement. Barwin also
undertook repairs to the stone and brickwork as well
as delicate paint stripping within the Victorian
arcade removing several layers of paint to the ornate
capitals by a method of poultice and DOFF system.
In order to preserve the steel frame of the structure,
the steel beams were grit blasted and treated with a
specialist Leighs paint system. With marine tank still
in place, the project required intense management
and coordination with the client and the engineer to
achieve the desired result, which included
maintaining the wellbeing of the marine life.

Description:
Barwin have been appointed by Sedgman Noble architects on
behalf of Springfield Management Association to undertake
external restoration and redecoration to this Grade II listed
residential property in Reading. Barwin restored this late Georgian
property that has fallen in disrepair to its former glory. The main
challenge was to carry out works with minimal disruption to the
tenants. Barwin have appointed dedicated Resident Liaison Officers
who held tenant meetings every two weeks whilst fairly invasive
works are being carried out in their homes.

Description:
Beverly House is a residential block of flats,
built in 1980s, located on Park Road
opposite the Hanover Gate entrance to
Regent's Park. Works consisted of DOFF
system cleaning of the red brick façade,
including sills, thresholds and any other
masonry surfaces from underside of eaves
o abutting ground surfaces to all elevations
including under croft, internal balconies,
roof areas. A fungicidal wash was applied
to the areas affected by moss and algae
growth, to prevent further growth
appearing. All internal glazed screens,
openings, airbricks, ventilators in the
external walls were sealed, in order to
prevent water entry into the interior of the
property or into any appliances connected
to the exterior wall (boilers, mechanical
fans).

Description:
Loxford House, a mansion built in the mid-
19th century, was once the residence of the
Dent family, renowned as glove makers. It is
an excellent example of Regency style
architecture with an elegant white stuccoed
facade.
Loxford House was recently restored to its
original glory and converted into luxury
refurbished homes. The focal point of
Loxford House is a delightful clock tower.
Barwin cleaned and then over coated the
original stonework which was defective and
aesthetically unpleasant, using a
reconstituted stone mortar. This was skilfully
applied and finished by hand to replicate the
detail and profile of the original stone.

Luxurious residential development set among 63
acres of picturesque Grade II listed parkland . Balls
Park is one of the most important surviving mid-
17th century houses in Hertfordshire, designed in
the so-called Artisan Mannerist style.
In respect to the grand heritage of the house,
Barwin carried out stone replacement and
restoration, brick matching and replacement,
reconstituted stone repair and specialist lime
pointing to both the brick and stonework. The
external facades were cleaned using DOFF system.

Description:
Westminster Bridge is Grade II* listed
bridge over the River Thames between
Westminster on the north side and
Lambeth on the south side. It was
opened to traffic on Queen Victoria's
birthday 24 March 1862 when she turned
43 years old.
Barwin carried out repairs and
decoration works to 17 ornate green
lighting columns, which are the same
colour as the leather seats in the House
of Commons. The decorative cast iron
columns were restored to their original
appearance and now match the rest of
the bridge. Gold leaf and paint were also
applied to match the main bridge fascia
replacement works.
