2. Overview
Located in the IT capital of India, Bangalore University (BU) was established in 1964 as an offshoot of the University of
Mysore.
BU is formed by the city’s 2 premier institutions, Central College (CC) and University of Visvesvaraya College of
Engineering (UVCE). Bangalore University offers multiple Undergraduate, Integrated, Postgraduate, Diploma, PG
Diploma, Certificate, and Doctorate courses for eligible candidates.
The Law College was established in 1948 and the College of Physical Education in 1959.
In 1973, Bangalore University moved into a new campus named Jnana Bharathi (JB), which is located on a sprawling
1100 acres of land.
Currently, the JB Campus houses several offices, PG departments, centres of higher learning, NSS Bhavan, outdoor
stadium, and other support services.
Bangalore University has completed 57 years of its existence and is regarded as one of the largest universities in Asia.
Though BU was intended to be a federal university, it has currently emerged as an affiliating university, with over 298
colleges affiliated to it.
