Hearing is simply perceiving sound through the ears in a subconscious manner that does not require concentration. Listening, on the other hand, is a conscious act that uses multiple senses like hearing, seeing, and touch to understand what is being communicated. It requires concentration to listen effectively. Many people are bad listeners because they want to talk more than listen, make judgments of others, have preconceived biases, get distracted or try to multitask, jump to conclusions, and fail to build up communication through focused listening.
