The B.A.B.Y. D.O.L.L. mentoring group was founded on February 6th by Tyler Bryant to mentor African American girls ages 7 to 16 in Montgomery, AL. The program aims to promote academic excellence, girl power, and discussions around everyday life, health, stereotypes and self-esteem. Tyler created the program as a way to be a role model for girls from poor neighborhoods and help them excel, just as a mentor helped her. Plans for the program include events like a clothes drive, pampering day, etiquette class and ball to empower the girls. Funding comes primarily from Tyler's own resources as a college student.

The media both celebrates and condemns “hook up culture,” a mythical environment in which college students have an endless string of casual sexual partners. In fact, students are having a lot less sex than these stories suggest. More, they report that the sex they are having is disappointing, to say the least. In this talk, I show that the problem on college campuses isn’t too much sex, it’s bad sex: unpleasurable, unwanted, uncaring, and competitive. The solution? Not to abandon the casual hook up (it has some interesting advantages), but to multiply the sexual discourses on campus in ways that give students the cognitive freedom and cultural support to make the sexual choices that are best for each of them.

Odias wants to enroll in I.C. Stars because he has always wanted to work in animation for movies and TV, but was unable to attend college due to being a victim of identity theft. In his free time, Odias enjoys volunteering, having previously volunteered as a camp counselor for four years. Girls bully each other through gossip, rumors, social exclusion and other emotionally hurtful behaviors. This can have both short and long-term consequences. To address relational aggression, we must encourage girls to respect each other, model positive behaviors, empower bystanders to intervene, and teach non-violent conflict resolution skills.

The solution? Not to abandon the casual hookup (it has some interesting advantages), but to even the playing field on college campuses by taking power away from privileged students, giving everyone the information they need to make informed decisions, and then let students themselves nurture and innovate new sexual cultures, thus diversifying sexual options on campus.

- 1. Tyler Bryant, Founder (205)213-5949 tynicolebryant@gmail.com B.A.B.Y. D.O.L.L. mentoring group was founded on February 6th, by Tyler N. Bryant. The acronym stands for: Bold Articulate Black Youth Determined to Overcome Labels and Limits. This mentor program targets African American girls between the ages of 7 and 16 that reside in the Washington Park Community of Montgomery, AL. This mentoring program is designed to promote academic excellence as well as promote girl power. Purpose To motivate, cultivate, and educate school-aged African American girls about every-day life. Through workshops, planned activities, and group discussions geared towards academic success, health and wellness, sex, overcoming stereotypes, beauty, and self-esteem, girls within this program will learn how to carry themselves as young ladies full of pride and ambition. MissionStatement The world says that I can’t, but I say that I can. The world says that I am not good enough, but I am more than good enough. The world has set limits for what I am capable of, but I say every wall can be knocked down. With God as my leader, anything that I dream, I can achieve. I am a child of the highest God. I am a B.A.B.Y. D.O.L.L. About the Founder My name is Tyler Nicole Bryant and I am a native of Birmingham, AL. I grew up as an only child in a single parent household with very few positive role models to look up to besides my mother. I am currently majoring in social work at Alabama State University with a mindset that change has to occur within the black community and that change starts with me. I created this mentor program because I want young black girls from poor neighborhoods where there are more teen moms than there are cars in the entire neighborhood to know that someone supports them, and that person is me. I want to be a role model for these girls because I am a walking testimony that because a mentor took the time to lead me in the right path that I was able to excel in anything I put my mind to, and that is what I want to happen for my girls. - 2. doll theme because young girls cherish their baby dolls, and I cherish our young girls as if they were fragile baby dolls. Plans for B.A.B.Y. D.O.L.L. School Clothes/Supply Drive Day of Pamper Etiquette Class Sleep Over: ‘Girls Nights In’ Mirror, Mirror On The Wall Have each girl stand in front of a mirror and say what they love most about themselves Explain that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, etc… Black and Bold Ball Dinner Awards Have the girls dress in pretty dresses Girl Power Symposium Have each girl portray a famous black woman Self-Esteem Workshop Discuss Careers Discuss College/Education How is it funded? Funding for this program is majority out of pocket cash. Although I am a struggling college student, I make sure to use my resources to the best of my ability to make sure I can offer these girls the necessary basic needs such as school clothes.
