- We are a community and regeneration associationWe are a young organisation – set up in 1998 We represent a specific local area in east London, PoplarWe have an extensive £4 million community investment programme
- We represent one of the most deprived wards in the UKWe have high unemployment Our residents health is joint worst in EnglandWe have the highest density of young in western Europe So we had a need for community regeneration and see the long term value of community regeneration
- Saleable impact and reputationSt Paul’s Way RegenerationWe have 10 Neighborhood Centres, with 125,000 visits per year and 8000regular visitors – popularity increasing, wide range of services.Our Employment and Training Team – have helped over 127 people into work last year during toughest economic climate, ran 250 training courses, have helped 1,000s since its launchOur Youth Service – is an accredited ofsted approved service used by over 2000 young people on a regular basis The woman in the right hand side of the photo is Nathalie Kosciusko Morizet, The former French Minister for Homes and Environment. She visited us to find out about our community regeneration.

- We spend more proportionally on CaN than any other in social housing Regularly debate as a Senior Management Team – our justification is hard facts showing its effectiveness Our deprivation stats improving rapidly – in 2007 we had 3 of the 6 most deprived wards in London, new we only have 1 ward in the bottom 10 No coincidence that we have resident majority board – they use, and have friends and family who use, our services – we can really judge the value Involving staff, board and stakeholders in this work 20 staff volunteered last summer to help our young people learn how to swim
- In 2011 we commissioned Goldsmith’s University to carry out a SROI(Social Return on Investment Study) of our Employment and Training Service The study evaluated the service between April 2011 to March 2012 and the target of getting 250 people into work.
- The study found that for every pound invested by Poplar HARCA there was a £11 return to societyGoldsmith’s evaluation showed that our Employment and Training Service brought value through un surprising returns: reduced benefits, increased tax, less rent arrears, health, a renewed sense of confidence. We were not quite geared up yet to measure the services’ impact on well being, although case study work indicates that resident’s well being is dramatically improved. For the future we will be accounting for this and this we believe will drive the return’s worth even higher. Also the report just looks at one area of our community investment. The challenge for us to continue to develop SROI measurements to evaluate all our community regeneration.
