Farmworker advocacy groups released a report called "Fields of Poison 2002" which found that California's pesticide safety laws are failing to adequately protect the state's 700,000 farmworkers. The report revealed widespread violations of pesticide safety regulations during inspections by the state's regulatory agency. It also showed that over 30% of reported pesticide poisonings involved cases where the laws were apparently followed. The groups are calling on regulators to take immediate actions like eliminating the most hazardous pesticides, improving regulations to reduce drift and residue exposure, strengthening enforcement, and improving farmworker access to information and healthcare.
