As a young translator working in the Los Angeles courts in the 1980s, Mary Ann Walker saw people being denied fair and equal justice simply because they couldn’t speak English. Because of the language barrier, lawyers would often build cases based on police reports or information provided by insurance companies – without any input from the client. The end result was that clients showed up in court with weak cases. Inspired to ensure fair and equitable legal representation for all consumers, Walker approached the Spanish-speaking attorneys she worked with and presented them with a proposal to jointly advertise legal services to the Latino community.
