TEXT I. ÇARŞI

I. The Beşiktaş football club was founded in 1903, making itone ofthe oldestand mostwell-loved teams in Turkey, but
beyond that it boasts having what has been described as “the greatest fan group of all time,” Çarşı. The club’s fans were
always devoted, but the group was organized in 1982 and named for the famous çarşı, or “fish market,” in the bustling
neighborhood ofBeşiktaş. Starting in the late 1970s, the young people of the Beşiktaş districtwho were supporting Beşiktaş
F.C. were usually spending theirtime around the bazaar, located inthe center ofthe district. They were living, coming together
and supporting the team togetherin that specific place. This lifestyle led them to found the group named Çarşı. The first leader
of the group was Mehmet Işıklar, a true fan who came to be known as “Optic” for his thick glasses. At the matches, he
mobilized the fans in cheers in front ofthe “KapalıTribün” (covered grandstands) section ofthe stadium, which the group still
favors today. Işıklar passed away in July 2007. Another notable leader is Alen Markaryan, a Turkish-Armenian. Besides being
a well-respected leader ofthe Çarşı group, Markaryan is a creative writer, or “football intellectual”.
II. Çarşı has become a veritable army of supporters known for its passion, political
commentary and decibel levels. Çarşı utilizes some symbols to express their opinions. One
of them is a derivative form of the letter A, as it is used in the notion of anarchy. However,
Çarşı states that they re-shaped the symbol by extending the low ends ofthe letter to indicate
a difference. Hence, they use the letter as a symbol ofthe rebellious soul ofthe Çarşı group.
This idea was the inspiration for the name of the TV documentary “Asi Ruh” dedicated to the
group, which began in 2007 (the group's 25th anniversary) and which came out on DVD in
2008.
III. Çarşı has campaigned againsta variety of issues, including war, nuclear plants, alcohol, and -- famously -- profanity,
since itwas founded.Atrip to İnönü Stadium ongame day reveals numerous signs condemning swearing used atthe stadium,
which disturbs people especially who come with their children. Before an importantderby match in 2008, the front page ofthe
group’s website, www.forzabesiktas.com, saw the words “The official fan drink of the Beşiktaş-Galatasaray match” and “No
to alcohol on match day” written over the image of a glass ofTurkish tea. Çarşı was also in Sinop for demonstrations against
plans to build a nuclear power plantin the central Black Sea city.
IV. In one ofits mostnotable moves, Çarşıannounced thatit was also “against itself.” Headed by Markaryan, the leaders
decided to dissolve the group due to a chain of events following the release of “Asi Ruh” and frequent discussions among
the supporters which questioned the group’s prominence above Beşiktaş F.C. itself. Markaryan wrote a letter to confirm and
explain the decision to stop the group’s activities. Despite noting that they were successful in supporting Beşiktaş, he wrote:
“But in doing this I believe and feel that we have done harm. We feel that we have started to disturb our greatand honorable
team. If we have begun to live a life without Beşiktaş F.C. and have started to do harm, then we can leave at once. Is not
everything for Beşiktaş?” However, three months later Çarşı again spoke up, saying: “We are announcing this to friends and
foes alike. We will again be in the stands as the Çarşı group this season.”
V. Çarşı has a solid relationship with the Beşiktaş F.C. higher ups, who respectthe group’s opinions, often taking them
into consideration when making decisions. The group’s main aim is to supportits team. In the end, it is a fan group, and a
determined one atthat. İnönü Stadium is incredibly noisy on match day, so noisy in factthat the Beşiktaş fans one time broke
the world decibel record during a derby with Fenerbahçe, one of the team’s greatest rivals. Çarşı does its best to make
opposing players’ lives miserable during play, by hissing and whistling whenever a rival team is in possession to make a
hostile atmosphere thatthreatens all butthe mostdetermined offootballers. The momentBeşiktaş gains possession, however,
their tone softens and singing and cheering picks up right where it left off. Possession changes enough throughout a match
to make it a truly upsetting experience,an emotional roller coaster of a game that must be experienced to be understood.
This ambience is particularly prevalent in derbies, matches against other rivals and politically charged games, such as
Beşiktaş’s home matchagainstIsraeli side MaccabiTelAviv, whichsaw heavy security and anti-Israel protests due to Turkey’s
ongoing tension with Israel.
VI. Çarşı does not have a homogenous structure and it does not consistof a certain group of people with a specific
identity. People from differentsocial backgrounds, cultural environments, and ethnic origins are assembled in the group even
though they supportopposite ways of thinking in terms of politics or ideologies. However, an all-around antagonistic image
and attitude reflect the basic characteristics ofthe group.

TEXT II. WHATSAPP DEAL
B1 LEVEL MIDYEAR January 2, 2015

I. With Facebook eyeing the mobile Internet,Mark Zuckerberg made his first much-publicized appearance atthe Mobile
World Congress in Barcelona last week. Executives from mobile operators were likely to greet Zuckerberg with some
trepidation. However, they should consider themselves lucky and don’t need to have any concern for now because their
business model earns money directly from services, while Facebook struggles to do so indirectly through advertising.
II. In Europe, mobile operators are trying to combine the mobile, landline, and cable-TV industries and strengthen the
European market. They aim for increased competition and a trend towards partnership. However, operators essentially just
provide Internet connections and have little control over what is provided through them. Some of the new mobile functions
such as Internet messaging through WhatsApp and voice-over-IP telephony such as Skype lessen their traditional income
sources and make it harder to make money from the investments they made in technology that provides faster connectivity
for consumers.
III. In the mobile operatormarket, data packages are nowincreasingly the only thing consumers pay for.
It is becoming harderand harder to demand othercharges, whether for calls or texts, because consumers
now have so many Internet-based alternatives. Therefore, it is understandable that operators are
concerned aboutFacebook gaining so much power that it can challenge their last remaining source of
income. Only a few weeks ago, Vodafone strictly refused a requestfrom Facebook. The requestwas that
Facebook asked Vodafone notto take money from Vodafone users for their data usage ofthe Facebook app. However, some
companies are less steadfast. T-Mobile’s GoSmartbrand in the US is already trying to attract customers with free Facebook
usage. In addition, several other operators have also agreed to provide access to a minimal version of Facebook, called
0.facebook.com,withoutcharging for it through their standard data fees.
IV. Now that Facebook has bought Instagram and, more recently, WhatsApp, it has gained even more mobile users.
Facebook is so powerful that it can force operators not to claim data charges for its services or push them to accept
unpalatable consequences because mobile operators know that if WhatsApp, Instagram, and the Facebook app were
cheaper to use on other networks, consumers would switch to those. In that case, charging for connectivity would become
much harder for operators. Regulators might help the mobile operator companies ifFacebook used its online power in this
way, but it might not come to that. Facebook is less ofa threat to operators than it may seem. It is used on mobile phones
less than it is used on personal computers; the fact that it paid an incredible $19 billion to buy WhatsApp shows how much it
wants to geta good position in the mobile operator market. Now only positioning itself, Facebook may want to dominate the
mobile operator marketin the future. For Facebook to acceptpaying such a high price, it must expecta significant boostto
its ability to make money in the mobile operator sector. Justbeing big in terms of user numbers doesn’tdeliver profits, even
if Zuckerberg manages to push operators into keeping Facebook data usage free ofcharge.
V. Charging $1-per-year to all its users, WhatsApp’s revenues are still only $500 million a year. At that rate, Facebook
wouldn’t getits money back for decades. Therefore, the strategic motivation ofFacebook paying this sky-high price mustbe
something else.Googleintegrating with Youtube drove traffic to the video site while allowing Google to place moreadvertising.
Both were better off as a result. Facebook is likely to aim for a similar result with WhatsApp. Similar to Google, Facebook’s
interest is in signing up more users and placing targeted advertising. However, WhatsApp’s managers are fundamentally
opposed to advertising on the messaging platform. Facebook definitely promised itwould do no such thing, yetadvertising is
crucial to Facebook’s business model and not being able to make money from WhatsApp’s user base conflicts with the
company’s business strategy.
VI. Mobile users seemquite aware and are reacting already.Alternative messaging platformThreema saw usernumbers
double overnightwhen it was announced that WhatsApp users would soon be Facebook users. Telegram reported an even
bigger surge. Google Hangouts, ICQ, Line, SnapChat, Viber, WeChat, Wickr, and others are also competing to absorb any
customers leaving WhatsApp.
VII. Zuckerberg may have billions to spend, but mobile operator executives, who are very bothered and concerned
nowadays, shouldn’t worry. The desperation Facebook revealed through the price they were willing to pay for WhatsApp
reveals how tricky itis to build a business on advertising alone. Although providing connectivity isn’tas trendy as social media
and mobile apps, the mobile operator market is builton strong foundations. Despite those foundations, now is notthe time to
rest on their successes as the mobile operator marketis entering a dangerous phase. However, in the end there will always
be a need for connectivity.

B1 LEVEL MIDYEARJanuary 2, 2015 4 I. The Beşiktaş football club was founded in 1903, making itone ofthe oldestand mostwell-loved teams in Turkey, but beyond that it boasts having what has been described as “the greatest fan group of all time,” Çarşı. The club’s fans were always devoted, but the group was organized in 1982 and named for the famous çarşı, or “fish market,” in the bustling neighborhood ofBeşiktaş. Starting in the late 1970s, the young people of the Beşiktaş districtwho were supporting Beşiktaş F.C. were usually spending theirtime around the bazaar, located inthe center ofthe district. They were living, coming together and supporting the team togetherin that specific place. This lifestyle led them to found the group named Çarşı. The first leader of the group was Mehmet Işıklar, a true fan who came to be known as “Optic” for his thick glasses. At the matches, he mobilized the fans in cheers in front ofthe “KapalıTribün” (covered grandstands) section ofthe stadium, which the group still favors today. Işıklar passed away in July 2007. Another notable leader is Alen Markaryan, a Turkish-Armenian. Besides being a well-respected leader ofthe Çarşı group, Markaryan is a creative writer, or “football intellectual”. II. Çarşı has become a veritable army of supporters known for its passion, political commentary and decibel levels. Çarşı utilizes some symbols to express their opinions. One of them is a derivative form of the letter A, as it is used in the notion of anarchy. However, Çarşı states that they re-shaped the symbol by extending the low ends ofthe letter to indicate a difference. Hence, they use the letter as a symbol ofthe rebellious soul ofthe Çarşı group. This idea was the inspiration for the name of the TV documentary “Asi Ruh” dedicated to the group, which began in 2007 (the group's 25th anniversary) and which came out on DVD in 2008. III. Çarşı has campaigned againsta variety of issues, including war, nuclear plants, alcohol, and -- famously -- profanity, since itwas founded.Atrip to İnönü Stadium ongame day reveals numerous signs condemning swearing used atthe stadium, which disturbs people especially who come with their children. Before an importantderby match in 2008, the front page ofthe group’s website, www.forzabesiktas.com, saw the words “The official fan drink of the Beşiktaş-Galatasaray match” and “No to alcohol on match day” written over the image of a glass ofTurkish tea. Çarşı was also in Sinop for demonstrations against plans to build a nuclear power plantin the central Black Sea city. IV. In one ofits mostnotable moves, Çarşıannounced thatit was also “against itself.” Headed by Markaryan, the leaders decided to dissolve the group due to a chain of events following the release of “Asi Ruh” and frequent discussions among the supporters which questioned the group’s prominence above Beşiktaş F.C. itself. Markaryan wrote a letter to confirm and explain the decision to stop the group’s activities. Despite noting that they were successful in supporting Beşiktaş, he wrote: “But in doing this I believe and feel that we have done harm. We feel that we have started to disturb our greatand honorable team. If we have begun to live a life without Beşiktaş F.C. and have started to do harm, then we can leave at once. Is not everything for Beşiktaş?” However, three months later Çarşı again spoke up, saying: “We are announcing this to friends and foes alike. We will again be in the stands as the Çarşı group this season.” V. Çarşı has a solid relationship with the Beşiktaş F.C. higher ups, who respectthe group’s opinions, often taking them into consideration when making decisions. The group’s main aim is to supportits team. In the end, it is a fan group, and a determined one atthat. İnönü Stadium is incredibly noisy on match day, so noisy in factthat the Beşiktaş fans one time broke the world decibel record during a derby with Fenerbahçe, one of the team’s greatest rivals. Çarşı does its best to make opposing players’ lives miserable during play, by hissing and whistling whenever a rival team is in possession to make a hostile atmosphere thatthreatens all butthe mostdetermined offootballers. The momentBeşiktaş gains possession, however, their tone softens and singing and cheering picks up right where it left off. Possession changes enough throughout a match to make it a truly upsetting experience,an emotional roller coaster of a game that must be experienced to be understood. This ambience is particularly prevalent in derbies, matches against other rivals and politically charged games, such as Beşiktaş’s home matchagainstIsraeli side MaccabiTelAviv, whichsaw heavy security and anti-Israel protests due to Turkey’s ongoing tension with Israel. VI. Çarşı does not have a homogenous structure and it does not consistof a certain group of people with a specific identity. People from differentsocial backgrounds, cultural environments, and ethnic origins are assembled in the group even though they supportopposite ways of thinking in terms of politics or ideologies. However, an all-around antagonistic image and attitude reflect the basic characteristics ofthe group. 21. The word mobilized in paragraph I could bestbe replaced by---.

B1 LEVEL MIDYEARJanuary 2, 2015 6 I. With Facebook eyeing the mobile Internet,Mark Zuckerberg made his first much-publicized appearance atthe Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last week. Executives from mobile operators were likely to greet Zuckerberg with some trepidation. However, they should consider themselves lucky and don’t need to have any concern for now because their business model earns money directly from services, while Facebook struggles to do so indirectly through advertising. II. In Europe, mobile operators are trying to combine the mobile, landline, and cable-TV industries and strengthen the European market. They aim for increased competition and a trend towards partnership. However, operators essentially just provide Internet connections and have little control over what is provided through them. Some of the new mobile functions such as Internet messaging through WhatsApp and voice-over-IP telephony such as Skype lessen their traditional income sources and make it harder to make money from the investments they made in technology that provides faster connectivity for consumers. III. In the mobile operatormarket, data packages are nowincreasingly the only thing consumers pay for. It is becoming harderand harder to demand othercharges, whether for calls or texts, because consumers now have so many Internet-based alternatives. Therefore, it is understandable that operators are concerned aboutFacebook gaining so much power that it can challenge their last remaining source of income. Only a few weeks ago, Vodafone strictly refused a requestfrom Facebook. The requestwas that Facebook asked Vodafone notto take money from Vodafone users for their data usage ofthe Facebook app. However, some companies are less steadfast. T-Mobile’s GoSmartbrand in the US is already trying to attract customers with free Facebook usage. In addition, several other operators have also agreed to provide access to a minimal version of Facebook, called 0.facebook.com,withoutcharging for it through their standard data fees. IV. Now that Facebook has bought Instagram and, more recently, WhatsApp, it has gained even more mobile users. Facebook is so powerful that it can force operators not to claim data charges for its services or push them to accept unpalatable consequences because mobile operators know that if WhatsApp, Instagram, and the Facebook app were cheaper to use on other networks, consumers would switch to those. In that case, charging for connectivity would become much harder for operators. Regulators might help the mobile operator companies ifFacebook used its online power in this way, but it might not come to that. Facebook is less ofa threat to operators than it may seem. It is used on mobile phones less than it is used on personal computers; the fact that it paid an incredible $19 billion to buy WhatsApp shows how much it wants to geta good position in the mobile operator market. Now only positioning itself, Facebook may want to dominate the mobile operator marketin the future. For Facebook to acceptpaying such a high price, it must expecta significant boostto its ability to make money in the mobile operator sector. Justbeing big in terms of user numbers doesn’tdeliver profits, even if Zuckerberg manages to push operators into keeping Facebook data usage free ofcharge. V. Charging $1-per-year to all its users, WhatsApp’s revenues are still only $500 million a year. At that rate, Facebook wouldn’t getits money back for decades. Therefore, the strategic motivation ofFacebook paying this sky-high price mustbe something else.Googleintegrating with Youtube drove traffic to the video site while allowing Google to place moreadvertising. Both were better off as a result. Facebook is likely to aim for a similar result with WhatsApp. Similar to Google, Facebook’s interest is in signing up more users and placing targeted advertising. However, WhatsApp’s managers are fundamentally opposed to advertising on the messaging platform. Facebook definitely promised itwould do no such thing, yetadvertising is crucial to Facebook’s business model and not being able to make money from WhatsApp’s user base conflicts with the company’s business strategy. VI. Mobile users seemquite aware and are reacting already.Alternative messaging platformThreema saw usernumbers double overnightwhen it was announced that WhatsApp users would soon be Facebook users. Telegram reported an even bigger surge. Google Hangouts, ICQ, Line, SnapChat, Viber, WeChat, Wickr, and others are also competing to absorb any customers leaving WhatsApp. VII. Zuckerberg may have billions to spend, but mobile operator executives, who are very bothered and concerned nowadays, shouldn’t worry. The desperation Facebook revealed through the price they were willing to pay for WhatsApp reveals how tricky itis to build a business on advertising alone. Although providing connectivity isn’tas trendy as social media and mobile apps, the mobile operator market is builton strong foundations. Despite those foundations, now is notthe time to rest on their successes as the mobile operator marketis entering a dangerous phase. However, in the end there will always be a need for connectivity. 31. The word trepidation in paragraph I is closestin meaning to ---.
