The objective of Ayurveda is to maintain the health of healthy individuals, cure illnesses, and maintain equilibrium of the body, mind and soul. The basic principles are the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), seven dhatus (tissues), and three malas (waste products), and treatment aims to maintain normalcy of these attributes. While modern science has helped identify phytochemicals in herbs and prove efficacy, Ayurvedic treatments using natural herbs are considered safe with few side effects. Ayurveda is gaining more global acceptance.
