For over 15 years, University of Missouri Extension conducted value added agriculture efforts in Southeast Missouri using two approaches: education and facilitation. Educational efforts informed clients of business opportunities and development methods, while facilitation organized farmer groups, networked with agencies, and acquired grants to develop enterprises. These efforts developed a culture of entrepreneurship in the region and resulted in new value added agriculture businesses, including biodiesel facilities, a rice drying operation, and agricultural tourism enterprises.
