What we've built at Zalando is complex. Supporting – profitably – a publicly traded e-commerce company that does business in 15 diverse European markets, with more than 15 million active users who all speak different languages, use different payment methods, prefer different shipping methods, and have different product tastes, has required nonstop innovation. Until recently we've focused on building a unified, comprehensive retail system, quickly, that solves just our problems. But to truly fight against complexity – particularly the accidental complexity that slows down our development process – we have adopted a microservices architecture. And when it comes to DevOps, we’ve gone a step beyond the "You build it, you run it" motto--working in autonomous teams with DevOps treated as a "first-class entity.” In this talk, Henning Jacobs (Software Architect) and Jan Löffler (Head of Platform Engineering) will share their experience implementing “Radical Agility” from a DevOps perspective. “Radical Agility” is the Zalando technology team’s multi-pronged approach to managing the complexity that results from building an architecture of massive size. Henning and Jan will focus on how microservices enable Zalando’s engineers to move faster and build systems that scale, at scale, and avoid dependencies. They will show how microservices, in conjunction with a cloud infrastructure, support teams as they try strive for autonomy. Finally, they will draw upon their experiences to show how this all works in practice, and discuss what is organizationally and architecturally necessary to make DevOps a top priority for all members of your tech organization.

Serverless can be misleading as a descriptor. Serverless infrastructure actually runs on servers. However, the “server-less” reference comes from the fact that serverless abstracts the complexity of running servers away from the software developer which enables them to develop software without having to worry about the scaling, redundancy and overall infrastructure design. This is called Function-as-a-Service or Faas for short. For the purposes of this talk, we’ll discuss serverless technologies where someone else is providing serverless infrastructure. Popular serverless platforms include Amazon Web Services Lambda, Google Cloud Functions, and Microsoft Azure Functions. The presentation will also discuss the software that can be used to deliver Functions-as-a-Service (FaaS) that enables serverless, including serverless frameworks like Knative, Kubeless, OpenFaaS, and Oracle’s fn. Finally, we’ll cover what a cloud-native application might look like including the use cases and design patterns that serverless is geared towards providing.

Do you use Cloud? Why? What about the 15 year legacy of your data center? How many Enterprise vendors tried to sell you their "Hybrid Cloud" solution? What actually is a Hybrid Cloud? Cloud computing is not just a new way of running servers or Docker containers. The interesting part of any Cloud offering are managed services that provide solutions to difficult problems. Prime examples are messaging (SNS/SQS), distributed storage (S3), managed databases (RDS) and especially turn-key solutions like managed Hadoop (EMR). Hybrid Cloud is usually understood as a way to unify or standardize server hosting across private data centers and Public Cloud vendors. Some Hybrid Cloud solutions even go as far as providing a unified API that abstracts away all the differences between different platforms. Unfortunately that approach focuses on the lowest common denominator and effectively prevents using the advanced services that each Cloud vendor also offers. However, these services are the true value of Public Cloud vendors. Another approach to integrating Public Cloud and private data centers is using services from both worlds depending on the problems to solve. Don't hide the cloud technologies but make it simple to use them - both from within the data center and the cloud instances. Create a bridge between the old world of the data center and the new world of the Public Cloud. A good bridge will motivate your developers to move the company to the cloud. Based upon recent developments at ImmobilienScout24, this talk tries to suggest a sustainable Cloud migration strategy from private data centers through a Hybrid Cloud into the AWS Cloud. Bridging the security model of the data center with the security model of AWS. Integrating the AWS identity management (IAM) with the existing servers in the data center. Secure communication between services running in the data center and in AWS. Deploying data center servers and Cloud resources together. Service discovery for services running both in the data center and AWS. Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
