In this sesison, we will take a deeper look at how to get started using Amazon EKS by setting up a new cluster using 'eksctl' and deploying a sample application to it. We will look at the components created and how to configure a custom domain and using Amazon Certificate Manager to run it over https. We will also look at using AWS AppMesh for service discovery in the cluster.

- So for those of you that aren't too familiar with what Kubernetes is exactly let's do a quick 101. The project that started out at google by team of about three engineers quickly added more added to that group shortly after. it was launched and released around mid year 2014, it's heavily influenced by an internal system Google calls Borg and it's an open source system that's designed to automate the deployment, the management and the scaling of containerized applications on as a project it was contributed to the cloud native computing foundation in fact it was the first project contributed to the cloud native computing foundation. and it since went on to become the first project to officially graduate from the cloud native computing foundation so congratulations Kubernetes for that milestone.
- In addition to the Kubernetes masters, you also need to run etcd, the core persistence layer for Kubernetes. Etcd is a distributed key value store- this is where the critical data for the cluster is stored. You can optionally co-locate the masters and etcd on the same instances, so you only need to run three instances instead of six to support the control plane. This makes tradeoffs in the operational burden when upgrading your cluster, though. This is one of the many complexities you will encounter when standing up your own kubernetes insfrastructure. You then need to run the actual worker nodes- this is where your applications run. Worker nodes are generally deployed in autoscaling groups. We’ll be deploying your control plane with instances that make sense for your use case. Prior to EKS, you needed to expend valuable cognitive functioning on projecting your kubernetes use cases. Kubernetes guidance today recommends specific master instance types based on your cluster size. These are also relatively narrow bands today, which as we know is tough to project. If you get it wrong, well, you’re re-deploying. Cancel your mountain biking plans this weekend. With EKS, we’ll monitor the control plane metrics and performance and scale the up when necessary in a transparent manner- this is a major advantage of a fully HA control plane. Other obvious benefits of course, include things like still having access to your cluster during things like networking partitions or power outages.
