What is the Application Discovery Service?
A Discovery Tool
• A means for integrators to quickly and reliably plan application migration projects by automatically
identifying applications running in on-premises data centers, their associated dependencies, and
their performance profile.
How does it work?
• Agent or Agentless Discovery
– Differing capabilities between methods
• CLI and SDK driven
– Console to be released on December 19th
What can it capture?

What is AWS Server Migration Service?
A Migration Tool
• An agentless migration tool for migrating workloads in to AWS. Automate,
schedule and track the replication of live server volumes
• Its agentless as it is performing block level replication at Hypervisor level
(VMWare only at this stage)
Generous OS Support
• Windows Server 2003, 2008, 2012, and 2016, and Windows 7, 8, and 10; Red Hat
Enterprise Linux (RHEL), SUSE/SLES, CentOS, Ubuntu, Oracle Linux, Fedora, and
Debian Linux operating systems
Regions supported
• US East (N. Virginia), Asia Pacific (Sydney), EU (Ireland, Frankfurt) and
GovCloud (US) regions

What isn’t AWS Server Migration Service?
Disaster Recovery
• Whilst it could be looked upon as a tool for DR, this is an anti-
pattern. SMS in its current shape is purely a migration tool.
There is a maximum of replication time period of 90 days per
replication job.
An automated process
• The output of the SMS service is an AMI. It is not going to create
an EC2 instance based on VMWare vCenter configuration.

How to get started with AWS Server Migration Service
1. Deploy the AWS Connector (standalone VM) on VMware vCenter
2. Import vCenter VM inventory into the AWS Management Console
3. Choose VMs you want to migrate to AWS in the console
4. Configure replication for selected group of VMs (initial replication time,
replication interval, license type)
5. Start replication and track the progress
6. For each VM, you will see the list of AMIs created at each replication interval

Key features of AWS Server Migration Service
• End-to-end automation of replication from on-premises server to AMI
• Create and manage a customized replication scheduled designed for large-scale
migrations and track the progress in the AWS Management Console
• Incremental replication of live server volumes between every 12-24 hours
• Secure transfer of replicated server volumes over TLS
• Import/delete server catalog in the AWS Management Console
• On-demand replication feature in addition to periodic incremental replication
