TOPCOAT CARE
An effective detergent for cleaning, yet still gentle enough for frequent use on AWLGRIP and AWLCRAFT 2000.
AWLWASH has been extensively tested in AWLGRIP’s laboratories and in the harsh yacht environment.
Wash Down Concentrate -73234
AWLGRIP developed AWLCARE for customers who want to protect their painted finish and need the additional cleaning power
of a hand applied product. AWLCARE will help temporarily seal and restore shine to painted surfaces that have become
porous due to age or mistreatment. Once a painted surface becomes porous it allows dirt to collect on the surface making
the normal washing process more difficult. Regular applications of AWLCARE will help seal the porosity, helping to maintain a satisfactory
appearance until there is time to repaint.
• AWLCARE contains no harsh abrasives and will not scratch the painted surface.
• AWLCARE leaves a non-yellowing, protective polymer coating which lasts through multiple washings.
• AWLCARE removes mild stains such as water spots and diesel soot and with regular applications, increases resistance to
attack from acid rain and other environmental pollutants.
Protective Polymer Sealer - 73240
• AWLWASH does not contain alkalies, acids, or abrasives, and is free rinsing, which decreases drying time.
• AWLWASH is 100% biodegradable and comes in a refillable, “Tip ‘N Measure” container, which makes it easy to get the
proper mix ratio: One ounce of AWLWASH per gallon of water.

Awlgrip manufactures two different topcoats to
meet the needs of a dynamic market. The
Awlgrip topcoat uses a polyester urethane
resin, whilst Awlcraft 2000 uses an acrylic
resin. The difference is molecular size.
Polyester molecules are much smaller than
acrylic molecules. A given volume of
polyester resin contains many more
molecules than the same volume of acrylic
resin. Thus the polyester has more reaction
sites than the acrylic. When both are fully
crosslinked, the polyester forms a tighter,
tougher film. The more dense crosslinking
provides a harder, more abrasion resistant
film, with better chemical resistance than the
acrylic film.
High crosslink density yields better chemical
and abrasion resistance. It also yields a rigid
film. In today’s marketplace there is a need
for both acrylic and polyester urethane
technology. Both resins will resist staining
and provide long lasting gloss.
Application characteristics, chemical and stain
resistance, repairability, and cure times all
need to be considered when choosing a
urethane.
HHOOWW TTHHEEYY WWOORRKK
Crosslinked, two component polyurethanes
dry when the solvent evaporates. Then they
cure as the components react to form the
urethane molecule. The more crosslinks, the
more durable the final finish. But keep in
mind, a longer cure time is needed for the
coatings to reach this durable, final finish.
Coatings with a relatively long cure time
allow the pigments to migrate toward the
substrate. A resin-rich wear layer forms,
much like the clear urethane film on a
“no wax” floor.
This resin-rich layer provides long term
protection for the pigment particles, improves
color and gloss retention, and provides the
deep gloss associated with high quality
urethanes.

Be cautioned however! Choose the topcoat
you require for your project first, then
investigate the primer system to support the
topcoat performance. AWLGRIP offers a
complete line of chemically compatible
primers, fairing compounds and surfacers
to support its topcoats.
Do not mix any components, other than
those manufactured by AWLGRIP, into the
AWLGRIP system.
AWLGRIP provides detailed instructions for
care and maintenance of topcoats, including
mild but effective products such as
AWLWASH and AWLCARE to selp
maintain the high gloss urethane topcoats.
This in fact is the AWLGRIP coating
advantage –performance delivered through
a complete coating system.

6. For Professional Use Only
Awlgard Interior Urethane is designed for use where a durable urethane
is required and the application of a solvent borne coating is impractical.
Typical applications include engine rooms, lazarettes, lockers, cabinet
interiors and bulkheads. This two component urethane has excellent
solvent resistance to denatured alcohol and acetone, as well as diesel
fuel and anti-freeze.
The water reducible technology provides a product with low odor and a
flash point greater than 200°F/93°C. Painters rave about the desirable
application characteristics including
quick tack times, extended pot life,
and superior flow and levelling.
Awlgard Interior Urethane has
excellent gloss retention, heat
resistance to 180°F/82°C, shelf
stability and superior hiding
characteristics.
Standard colors of Awlgard include Matterhorn White (W8201), Cloud White (W8202) and Snow
White (W8203). All colors can be applied by spray, brush or roller. Mix ratio is 3 parts color base to 1
part converter (W3201) to 1 part reducer (T0149). All three components are sold as a five-quart kit.

Interior Urethane Topcoat
a
Awlspar Classic Spar Varnish (M3131) and Awlspar H.S.
Marine Varnish (M3146)
For Interior and Exterior Wood
• Awlspar Classic Spar varnish is a traditional phenolic tung oil varnish
modified with state of the art UV inhibitors and absorbers. The rich
amber coating is simple to apply by brush and provides a smooth finish. It is the
perfect product for the traditionalist wanting superior durability from an easy to
apply fast recoat formula.
• Awlspar HS is a higher solids version of the Awlspar Classic Spar Varnish.
As well as a higher solids content it has less solvent VOC emissions (2.85lbs/gl
or 285g/lt) and improved film build with superior gloss.
• Awlspar HS and Awlspar Classic Spar Varnish can be overcoated with
Awlbrite Clear in as little as 7 days.
Urethanes
The Awlbrite urethane is a three component system available in Clear gloss (J3005), Semi-Gloss (J3630) and Amber (J3678). The
Awlbrite range provides the ultimate durability and protects the wood from glass stains, detergents and general wear and tear eluded
to foot traffic. Apply over Awlspar, Awlspar H.S., Awlbrite Amber Sealer or Quik-Fil.
Awlbrite Clear (J3005) is a buffable, high build, three component clear
urethane with excellent flow characteristics that provide a tough, long
lasting, high gloss finish.
Awlbrite Semi-Gloss (J3630) provides a low sheen finish for interior
surfaces where a durable fast drying finish is required.
Awlbrite Amber Sealer (J3678) allows applicators to apply a tinted product
directly onto the wood surface to give a rich, uniform color when used with a
gloss or semi-gloss product. Optimized for spray application only.
7. For Professional Use Only
• Tin-free, ablative, co-polymer.
• Multi-season performance.
• Wet sands for racing bottoms.
• Unique cleaning mechanism prevents
permanent attachment of slime and all other
types of fouling organisms.
• Recommended for use where extended dry
docking intervals are required.
• Recommended for use on fiberglass, wood,
and steel.
• Do not use on aluminum.
AWL®STAR GOLD LABEL is a tin–free ablative co-polymer type antifouling designed to provide
multi-season protection from fouling when applied according to specification. An ablative antifouling
performs by the movement of the hull through the water, gradually wearing away the coating. As a result
a fresh, fully potent layer of antifouling is always exposed to the water.
AWL®STAR is designed to be applied over HULLGARD® Epoxy Primer. HULLGARD Epoxy Primer protects
the hull against attack from water while providing an ideal surface for which to apply the AWLSTAR GOLD
LABEL.

Hullgard Epoxy Primer D6070/D3707 is a two-component build primer that below water serves to protect
against corrosion and osmosis *
Hullgard Epoxy Primer is the ideal primer for subsequent application of Awlstar Gold Label Antifouling.
* When applied at the recommended film thickness.
Note: Hullgard Epoxy Primer is also highly suitable as a substrate primer above the waterline as it
forms an excellent key for subsequent products such as Awlfair Fairing Compound and High Build Epoxy Primer.
PRO-CURE X-98 and X-138
• Pro-Cure Accelerators are added to Awlgrip and Awlcraft 2000
topcoats and are used to decrease the drying or tape (masking)
times.
• Only small amounts of accelerator are added to
the paint:
X-98 Fast Accelerator (73014): Add 1/2 liquid
ounce (15ml) per 2 gallons of mixed topcoat
color base and converter (equivalent to 2 capfuls)
X-138 Inhibited Accelerator (73015):
Add 1 liquid ounce (30ml) per 2 gallons of mixed
topcoat color base and converter (equivalent to
3 capfuls)
Flattening Agent
AWL®COAT TPC; Temporary
Protective Coating
• Awl-Coat TPC is a single component, waterbased coating that dries
to form a tough, protective film.
• Awl-Coat TPC is intended for areas where coated substrates
require temporary protection against incidental contamination and
damage during transit, assembly and
installation. It’s fast to apply
and it’s fast to remove!
• Awlgrip recommends the use of Awl-Coat TPC
over Awlgrip Topcoat and Awlcraft 2000.
• Awl-Coat TPC sprays on to form a film that
dries up to 5 mils (125 microns) thick with a
single application (when airless sprayed).
• When the protective film is no longer
required, it will peel off easily and completely
at a wide range of temperatures.
• Griptex is a white, round polymer bead that can be added to any
Awlgrip or Awlcraft 2000 topcoat color to provide a non-skid texture
for deck and step areas.
• Griptex can be applied by one of two methods: by
sprinkling Griptex onto still tacky application of
topcoat, or by adding it to the topcoat to then be
spray applied.
• The Griptex range is available in fine (73012),
coarse (73013) and extra coarse (73237). These
grits can also be mixed together to create a
custom, non-skid texture that fits your individual
needs.
• Flattening Agent can be used to reduce the gloss
of Awlgrip and Awlcraft 2000 topcoats to a flat or
semi-gloss finish. For added flexibility you can also
create your own custom gloss level by adjusting the
quantity of product to the topcoat.
