This document announces an industry roundtable event on vulnerable plaque to be held on March 29, 2003 in Chicago. The roundtable aims to bring together cardiologists, researchers, and industry executives to discuss regulatory challenges, reimbursement issues, and identifying areas of common interest in developing and regulating new products for detecting and treating vulnerable plaque. The program will highlight emerging trends in treating heart disease caused by vulnerable plaque and the current regulatory climate for alternative clinical strategies. A panel of experts from academia, industry and government agencies will discuss these issues.
The document discusses a study that found propagermanium, an organic germanium compound, reduces atherosclerosis in mice by inhibiting macrophage infiltration. Propagermanium inhibits the MCP-1/CCR2 pathway, which plays an important role in macrophage recruitment during plaque formation. The study showed propagermanium treated mice had significantly smaller atherosclerotic lesions and fewer macrophages in plaques than untreated mice. By suppressing macrophage infiltration through the MCP-1 receptor, propagermanium may prevent atherosclerosis and be a potential drug for treating vulnerable plaque.
Shear stress regulation and vascular remodeling in response to changes in blood flow were found to differ significantly between rat strains. A study examining the effects of chronic flow alteration in the carotid arteries of genetically hypertensive (GH) rats and stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive (SHR-SP) rats identified the SHR-SP strain as poor regulators of shear stress compared to the GH strain. These findings suggest the strains have differential sensitivity to blood flow changes and differences in the mechanisms mediating vascular adaptation and remodeling. Further research using this model may help identify key genes involved in flow-mediated processes and remodeling, providing novel therapeutic targets for diseases involving vascular remodeling.

Candidate must have a BS in electrical engineering and experience with electrical design, software interfaces, data acquisition, and naval shipboard systems.
This document is an email from a recruiter at McKean Defense offering a fully funded position as a VTC Tech in Philadelphia, PA. The recruiter requests that the recipient email answers to seven questions to help expedite the interview and hiring process. The questions ask about commuting to the Navy Yard, availability to start, education level, VTC experience, certifications, familiarity with industry standards, and security clearance.
The document presents research on the secretion and regulation of apolipoprotein B48 (ApoB48) by primary hamster intestinal enterocytes. Studies show increased intracellular stability and oversecretion of ApoB48 from fructose-fed hamster enterocytes. The results suggest that hyperinsulinemia and increased de novo lipogenesis in the intestine may enhance ApoB48 secretion and contribute to elevated triglyceride levels.

This document discusses various methods for detecting vulnerable plaque, including thermography, intravascular MRI, optical coherence tomography, angioscopy, near IR, catheter-based detection, and IVUS. It also lists types of studies that can be used for validating diagnoses and treatments of vulnerable plaque, including autopsy specimens, animal models, and human studies. Finally, it proposes a trial to detect and treat vulnerable plaque using a vulnerability detector to identify patients with vulnerable plaque and randomize treatment.
Residents must separate paper, plastics, and glass into special bins or bags for recycling of household waste. The community has developed a special program to recycle broken or obsolete electronic equipment like computers, printers, cell phones, toasters, TVs, DVD players, and video game consoles. Community officials will collect these acceptable electronic items on the next two Fridays at the local police station and nearby shopping center. Air conditioners, humidifiers, and hazardous waste are not accepted.
1) The study investigated the uptake of SPIO (superparamagnetic iron oxide), an MRI contrast agent, by periadventitial fat in an atherosclerosis mouse model.
2) Results showed significantly greater uptake of iron in the periadventitial fat of apoE k/o mice compared to control mice, as measured by iron particles and area.
3) Preliminary evidence also suggests uptake of iron in the periadventitial fat of atherosclerotic rabbits and humans, suggesting macrophage-like activity in this tissue that warrants further investigation into its role in atherosclerosis and potential applications for plaque imaging.
A 71-year-old man with a history of diabetes, coronary artery disease status post myocardial infarction times three, and hypercholesterolemia was found to have an accidental left carotid stenosis and was scheduled for a left carotid endarterectomy. MRI of the carotid arteries was performed using SPIO contrast to better evaluate the extent of disease prior to surgery.
This document discusses inflammation in coronary artery plaques and its relationship to vulnerable plaques. It reports that:
1) Inflammation is common in deeper layers of atherosclerotic plaques and is associated with lipid content but not necessarily plaque rupture.
2) Patients with unstable angina tend to have evidence of widespread coronary inflammation, not just at the culprit lesion, suggesting vulnerable plaques may form throughout the arteries.
3) Given that vulnerable patients often have many inflamed plaques, targeting a single coated stent to one region may not be sufficient as a treatment approach for reducing acute coronary events risk.
Agile is popular for a reason – its benefits are seen by all stakeholders. However, making the transition to Agile is difficult and not the right for every project environment. Commitment-based Project Management (CBPM) evolved in non-scrum environments to generate very similar benefits to Agile methodologies: responsiveness, team engagement, quality, productivity, etc. It is another project management solution to turbulent, global marketplace.
The document discusses 5S and quality circles as tools for total quality management. 5S refers to a system for organizing and standardizing a workplace. It involves sorting, setting in order, shining, standardizing, and sustaining these practices. When implemented through a quality circle, which is a group-based problem solving technique, 5S can lead to benefits like increased productivity, quality and safety while decreasing waste and costs. An example is provided of a community college reprographics shop that saw improved customer service and space optimization from applying 5S through a quality circle.
This document presents a case study on the ban of Maggi noodles in India. It provides background on Maggi's history and introduction in India. It then details the facts around the ban, including that Maggi was found to contain high amounts of monosodium glutamate (MSG) and lead above permissible limits. The document concludes with survey data analyzing consumer behavior and perception after the ban, finding that most consumers were aware of the ban but many still believed Maggi to be tasty and would purchase it again if deemed healthy.
The document discusses human resource development and quality circles. It defines quality circles as small voluntary groups of employees that meet regularly to identify and solve work-related problems. The goals are to improve quality, productivity, and employee satisfaction. Quality circles have been successfully implemented in many Indian companies like BHEL and Hero Honda. They have led to benefits like reduced costs, defects, and improved processes, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. The key requirements for success include support from top management and a cooperative workplace culture where employees feel empowered to contribute to organizational improvement.
