Feb. 3, 2014 8:15 p.m. ET
A shortage of qualified pilots has hit U.S . airlines sooner and more severely than expected, leading the
airlines to accelerate hiring and cut some service.
The shortage flows from both a long-anticipated wave of pilot retirements and recently enacted rules that
require an increase in training for new pilots and more rest for existing aviators at passenger airlines.
R egional airlines—which offer meager starting pay and tend to lose pilots to major carriers—have so far
been affected the most, but that is having knock-on effects at the big airlines, which rely on their smaller
cousins to ferry passengers on shorter routes.
The problems are evident in recent announcements from two U.S . airlines at opposite ends of the spectrum.
Great Lakes Aviation Ltd. , a 32-year-old carrier based in C heyenne, W yo., says it suspended flights to six
small cities in the Upper Midwest on S aturday "due to the severe industrywide pilot shortage and its relative
acute impact."
The anticipated s hortfall of U.S . airline pilots is coming to fruition earlier and more dramatically than expected becaus e of a mix of
mas s retirements , the FAA's new res t rules and s harply higher training requirements for beginner pilots . Jack Nicas reports on

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

ACI-NA Urges White House, Congress To Free The Nation’s
Airports Asks Government Leaders To Remove Restrictions To
Airport Funding
Airports Council International-North America (ACI-NA) President
Greg Principato has written to President Barack Obama, Vice
President Joseph Biden, and the bipartisan congressional
leadership, urging them to remove the federal government's
restrictions on airport funding, facilitating critical aviation
infrastructure development and job creation in a way that meets the
demands from both liberal and conservative lawmakers.
Greg Principato
In his letters, Principato stressed that, "By removing the
federal government from regulating how local communities and their
airports generate resources for investment in aviation
infrastructure, you can do the right thing for the economy and for
our nation, while also pursuing a course that is good politics all
the way around."
Principato's letter went on to emphasize that allowing
airports more financial freedom makes great sense given the need to
reduce federal spending and federal involvement in local decisions
in the midst of unprecedented debt and deficit issues, the effects
of a lack of investment in the nation's infrastructure, and
high unemployment.
Principato also expressed ACI-NA's commitment to working
with the White House and Congress to ensure infrastructure
investment; economic growth and job creation are realized by
modernizing the way U.S. airports are regulated, reducing
Washington's role and giving local communities power over
their economic future.

Tiger Airlines Grounded Till August 1 Australian Budget Carrier
Replacing CEO, Promising Refunds
For the first time in Australia's history, the nation's
regulators have grounded an entire airline to look into serious
questions about its safety culture. The French News Service AFP
reports that the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) barred
Tiger Airlines from operating domestic flights Saturday for a week,
but has now determined it will need the rest of this month to
complete its investigation into the safety issues, and the
airline's response to its inquiries.
5. 4
CASA was scheduled to be in Federal Court in Melbourne on
Thursday to seek the extension.
Tiger Airways Australia is a subsidiary of Singapore's Tiger
Airways, which has sidelined its Australian CEO, Crawford Rix, and
sent group President Tony Davis to Australia from Singapore to take
charge of working with CASA's investigators. Rix is reportedly out
of the company effective July 31. CASA's action was triggered last
week when a flight approached an airport too low, and after
expressing its concern to the airline over pilot proficiency,
training, fatigue and other management issues. CASA spokesman Peter
Gibson said more questions were raised when investigators looked
through the airline's records.
AFP reports the grounding is costing Tiger the equivalent of
$1.6 million a week. In an official statement, the airline says it
is not opposed to CASA's review, and is refunding fares to
customers through the end of the month, but remains intent on
returning to service. The markets aren't so sure that will be
possible. The grounding coincides with what is normally a
profitable season for domestic airlines as Australian schools close
for vacation. Shares in Tiger Airways Holding, the parent company,
which have traded as high as $1.85 in the past year, fell this
week to well under a dollar. Competitors Virgin and Qantas have
both seen significant share price gains.
Virgin's Sir Richard Branson says he hopes his smaller rival can
survive. "I think it's going to be tough to come back from that,
but obviously for the sake of all the staff let's hope they manage
to get their act together and be back in a month's time." But
Gibson promises CASA will be thorough. "We have to make sure we
fully understand the reasons why these problems have occurred -- if
they are systemic problems, problems with process and problems with
safety systems."

FAA Celebrates 75th Anniversary Of Air Traffic Control Service
Began With 15 Employees In Three Control Centers
The FAA on Wednesday marked the 75th anniversary of federal air
traffic control as American aviation experiences its safest period
ever. Since its inception with 15 workers operating in just three
control centers in 1936, the agency has become a world leader,
pioneering safety improvements and developing new technology to
speed up flights, save fuel and improve safety.
"The United States has the safest air transportation
system in the world. But as the last 75 years show, we will never
stop working to make our system even safer," said
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.
"As a pilot, I am in awe of the aviation safety and
technological advancements that have been made in the last 75
years," said FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt. "NextGen
represents the next milestone in aviation innovation. The FAA is
committed to transforming our national airspace system so
passengers can reach their destinations even more safely and more
efficiently than they do today."
7. 6
Federal air traffic control began on July 6, 1936, when the
Bureau of Air Commerce took over the operation of the first airway
traffic control centers at Newark, N.J., Chicago and Cleveland.
Faced with a growing demand for air travel, the 15 employees who
made up the original group of controllers took radio position
reports from pilots to plot the progress of each flight, providing
no separation services. At the time, the fastest plane in the
commercial fleet was the Douglas DC-3, which could fly
coast-to-coast in about 17 hours while carrying 21 passengers.
Since then, the air traffic system has expanded from three
control centers to include 131 federal stand-alone airport traffic
control towers, 132 towers for terminal area approach control, 29
stand-alone terminal radar approach controls and 21 en route
traffic control centers. The number of controllers has grown from
15 to more than 15,000, a workforce that handles an average of
50,000 flights each day. The DC-3 has given way to jet aircraft
that can carry hundreds of passengers and fly from New York to Los
Angeles in about five hours.
The FAA continues to pioneer new technologies that will make air
traffic control safer and more efficient. The Next Generation Air
Transportation System, or NextGen, will transform air traffic
control in the U.S. from a system of ground-based radars to one
based on satellites. In parts of the country, controllers already
are beginning to track aircraft via satellites with a
state-of-the-art system called Automatic Dependent Surveillance
- Broadcast, or ADS-B. ADS-B will be available nationwide in
2013 and will enable more direct routes, saving time and money
while also lowering the industry's environmental
footprint.
This month the FAA will celebrate the 75th anniversary of
federal air traffic control by highlighting advancements in air
traffic controller training, NextGen, how the FAA handles
convective summer weather and aviation infrastructure
improvements.

PM launches mega low-cost terminal project
By MAZWIN NIK ANIS
mazwin@thestar.com.my
SEPANG: The opening of the world’s first mega terminal for low-cost carriers – to be
known as KLIA2 – will mark the nation’s growth and leadership in aviation not only in this
region but also the world, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri NajibRazak.
He said considering the exponential traffic growth in the low-cost sector, the Government
had prioritised the immediate development of a terminal that would meet low-cost travel needs
for the next 10 to 15 years.
The plan was a variation of the original KLIA Master Plan as low-cost travel and its
extraordinary boom was not previously envisioned or anticipated.
“Fortunately, we were able to accommodate the low-cost carriers’ needs for the past few
years at the current Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT),” Najib said at the project’s ground-
breaking ceremony here yesterday.
“However, the time has come to revolutionise the airport terminal design for low-cost
carriers and passengers in order to stay ahead of competition.”
The new low-cost carrier terminal is being built to handle 30 million passengers per year
initially and has the flexibility to allow for expansion to cater for future growth and changes to
the operational models of aircraft.
Landmark project: Najib signing a plaque at the ceremony in Sepang yesterday. With him
are (from right) Kong, Malaysia Airports Berhad managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad and
chairman Tan Sri DatukDrAris Othman.
Located 2km from the current Main Terminal building, KLIA2 will allow for easy inter-
terminal transfer and better connectivity between the two.

The Prime Minister said KLIA2, targeted to be completed in April 2012, was expected to
boost the nation’s tourism industry by attracting more airlines and visitors.
He added that the facility would increase tourism revenue from RM53bil last year to
RM168bil in 2020.
In his opening speech, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said the new LCCT
would meet passengers’ expectations with built-in walkways, bigger space per passenger and
total separation between arrival and departing passengers for improved security.
He added that the new terminal would have an integrated transport hub, connecting
various modes of transportation such as taxis, buses and the Express Rail Link (ERL) service.
Kong said the aviation industry was undergoing a paradigm shift with the accelerating
growth of low-cost carriers defining the future of air travel, especially in Asia.

MAHB IS GOING
MALDIVES
I got this from Bernama. It looks like MAHB is going places. Good for those who are going
to join MAHB - more chances to go overseas providing aviation services and expertise.
MAHB is surely going international exporting its services.

MAHB Wins Maldives' Airport Contract Via Consortium
KUALA LUMPUR, June 25 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has won a
bid to build, operate, modernise and expand Maldives' main airport, the Male International
Airport, via its GMR-MAHB consortium.
In a statment here today, MAHB said it has been successfully partnering with the GMR Group
since 2002, a Bangalore-based global infrastructure major with interests in airports, energy,
highways and urban infrastructure.
The airport operator said the Male International Airport was situated on the Huhule Island on the
politically stable archipelagpo, and was one of the fastest growing airports in the region.
MAHB managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad said the win signified an important milestone
for a Malaysian firm leading with its expertise in the international market.
The bid was participated by two other parties, namely the Aeroport De Paris, France-TAV,
Turkey consortium, and the Zurich Airport-GVK consortium.
With the project, MAHB now has four overseas airports in its portfolio, including the Rajiv
Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, and
Istanbul SabihaGokcen International Airport in Turkey.

AIRASIA X'S AGGRESSIVE COMPETITION AGAINST
MAS' ROUTES.
I got this from MAS CEO's blog. TgAzmil, IdrisJala's successor. This is his counter to AirAsia X's
aggressive competition against MAS' routes.
In life, if we want to succeed we must have an opinion on many things in life or better
correct opinion, lest we wont change for the better. Opinion is the basis of our goals, strategies
and implementation process. I always believe a action taken wrong is better than no action taken
at all.
Now the following is my opinion on the TgAzmil blog:-
Sorry MAS CEO, in the era of consumerism, you have to give the consumers the right to
decide which airline they want to fly with. So if they decide to fly with Air Asia because they
believe Air Asia given them value for money, then you shouldn't stop them through government
intervention. In US this is illegal as there is a law called Anti Thrust Law. No one is allowed to
monopolise an industry there.
By preventing Air Asia from competiting against MAS you are actually asking for
monopolistic right which is also not encouraged by WTO charter.
It is akin to Hilton Hotel in KL asking government to stop hotels like Sri Malaysia from
existing. You have to learn to compete because sooner or later there will more
airlines being established whether you like it or not. Under the open sky policy that is being
propagated by AFTA you will have to compete with other airlines even if Air Asia does not
exist, once this open sky policy is implemented. Only the best will survive in this competitive
world. And is good for the consumers.
What you could do is to continue improving your services and cut costs (good buying and
good human capital) so that MAS can become the darling of five-star airlines just like SIA. (SIA
don't even have a domestic market yet they could churn out three times more revenues than
MAS).
You could also play the game of Air Asia, that is establish a subsidiary for a low cost
carrier and with a different brand name and fight Air Asia in their own game. While MAS
maintain their 5 -star market segment your LC subsidiary fights Air Asia with their own game in
the LC segment. You can make use of Fire Fly to do this as it is already in
operations. Like I always say only those who are fittest will survive. good for the
consumers. And good for MAS too as you will learn to improve and not sit on your laurels and
grow to greater heights .
All the best.

MY OPINIONON AIRASIA X'S
AGGRESSIVE COMPETITION AGAINST
MAS' ROUTES.
rom my point of view, AirAsiasuppose tobuild their own
goal and have their own strategy in the organization to
compete any airlines not even in Malaysia but all over
the world. For long term period, AirAsia will be suffered from
bankruptcy due to poor of Routes,Financial and even long term
forecasting planning. I’m very sure, MAS is now contribute
more revenues for our country compare to AirAsia.
