1. Aves : Psittacula euparia (Parrot)
GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION
Parrot is found in India, Pakistan,
Myanmar, Sri Lanka and USA .
HABITAT
It is found on tall trees in flocks in city as well as in
villages. It is commonly found in the fruit trees, ripe
crops and in jungles.

4. General Characteristics of Parrot
• Commonly called Indian parakeet or parrot.
• Body is divisible into head, neck, back, breast and
abdomen.
• Head contains paired eyes, nostril and homy beaks.
• Feet adapted for grasping, holding and climbing.
• Tail feathers elongated. Maroon patches on wing
feathers.
• Flight is graceful and voice powerful.
• Female is green all over, but the male has a rose pink
and black neck collar ring.

5. Economic Importance
• Parrots are sometimes kept as pets.
• These birds are also used as a source of ecotourism in the form of bird-watching.
• People often spend money buying seeds and bird feeders to feed parrot
Special Features
• Parrot is a popular domesticated cage bird, found almost in every home.
• It copies and speaks some words like man.
• It is a serious agricultural pest to the cultivators and food growers.
• It causes enormous harm to standing crops and ripening orchard fruits.
• It eats maize, pulse, groundnuts and sometimes does considerable damage in newly sown
fields.

GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION
Assam roofed turtle found in the Brahmaputra-Meghna
drainage in India and parts of eastern Bangladesh.
HABITAT
It is found in terrestrial and freshwater habitats in areas with upland tropical moist
forest, fast-flowing streams and also in small rivers.

7. General Characteristics of Assam roofed turtle
• Assam Roofed Turtle has a triangular and
elevated carapace with a prominent spiked keel
and strongly serrated marginal plates.
• The carapace of Assam Roofed Turtle is olive-
brown in colour.
• The head of Assam roofed turtle is small .
• Adults may attain a maximum length of 20 cm,
although body sizes of 15 cm are more
common.
• Assam Roofed Turtles nest between late
October and February.
• The hatchlings of Assam Roofed Turtle appear
mainly between March and April.

8. Special features
• The Assam roofed turtle is shy and never basks on river banks, but only on emergent
logs or rocks.
• At the slightest disturbance, it will dive quickly to the middle of the river, hiding
between rocks.
• Juveniles often flee into accumulations of dead leaves for camouflage and remain
motionless.
