Dear salutation,
will you help stop the nightmare lasting a lifetime?
Imagine one of the dirtiest, dampest and most unhygienic places on earth. A community where families are
barely surviving in tiny 8 x 10 foot, single roomed shacks that are packed so tightly together, even the sun is
rarely seen in the dark alleys.
You’ve just pictured the Millat Bihari camp in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It’s here that 20 year-old Afsana is struggling
to earn just enough money to feed her husband and four-year-old daughter by embroidering saris. Her living
conditions are extremely dangerous and totally unfit for bringing up a young family.
On the rare occasions that Afsana leaves her rough bamboo, brick and tin construction she calls home, it’s
either to go to the communal bathroom or to collect water. Both are hazardous and humiliating experiences.
More often than not, Afsana must share her bath with three to four people at a time.
There’s only one latrine block for every 6,000 of the slum’s inhabitants and a severe lack of wells forces
families to fetch water from nearby ponds – where cholera and typhoid are a constant threat.
With so many people crammed together and no means to secure their shack, Afsana’s family also lives
in constant fear of being robbed or attacked, especially at night.
We urgently need your help today to end this nightmare for the millions like Afsana
who live in the world’s poorest slums.

Could you give just £16 to help us continue to provide safe and decent
homes for families living in poverty housing across the world?
Your support will be used where it’s needed most – making existing housing structures safe and
healthy, improving access to sanitation and clean water, and providing training opportunities for families
in slum communities.
Never before has the need been greater or more urgent to provide decent, secure homes for
people living in the burgeoning squalid and inhumane conditions of the world’s largest slums.
As more and more families are forced to move to the cities in a desperate search for work, the slum
populations are growing out of control. With little chance of finding work, people are trapped in a vicious cycle
of poverty where disease is spreading, crime is rampant and any hope for future generations is fading fast.
A gift of just £16 will help us break this cycle of poverty for more families.
Right now, our teams are working in the heart of poor communities across the world and helping to find
flexible solutions to improve housing for thousands of the world’s poorest people.
Your gift will ensure we can help even more families escape housing poverty forever. Please will you help
us give hope and a future to families like Afsana’s in Bangladesh by sending a gift today?
With heartfelt thanks.
Yours sincerely,
Ian Walkden
National Director
P.S. Please take a moment to read more about the plight of Afsana and her family who are trapped in the
horrendous slums of the Millat Bihari camp, Bangladesh. No one would ever choose to live like this,
which is why we urgently need your help today.
