These slides accompanied a June 4th, 2016 presentation made by Dan Gillean of Artefactual Systems at the Association of Canadian Archivists' 2016 Conference in Montreal, QC, Canada. This presentation aims to examine several existing or emerging computing paradigms, with specific examples, to imagine how they might inform next-generation archival systems to support digital preservation, description, and access. Topics covered include: - Distributed Version Control and git - P2P architectures and the BitTorrent protocol - Linked Open Data and RDF - Blockchain technology The session is part of an attempt by the ACA to create interactive "working sessions" at its conferences. The bad news is it’s harder than many blogs and software package docs would have you believe. The truth is nearly all interpretable machine learning techniques generate approximate explanations, that the fields of eXplainable AI (XAI) and Fairness, Accountability, and Transparency in Machine Learning (FAT/ML) are very new, and that few best practices have been widely agreed upon. This combination can lead to some ugly outcomes! This talk aims to make your interpretable machine learning project a success by describing fundamental technical challenges you will face in building an interpretable machine learning system, defining the real-world value proposition of approximate explanations for exact models, and then outlining the following viable techniques for debugging, explaining, and testing machine learning models Mateusz is a software developer who loves all things distributed, machine learning and hates buzzwords. His favourite hobby data juggling. He obtained his M.Sc. in Computer Science from AGH UST in Krakow, Poland, during which he did an exchange at L’ECE Paris in France and worked on distributed flight booking systems. After graduation he move to Tokyo to work as a researcher at Fujitsu Laboratories on machine learning and NLP projects, where he is still currently based.

Tim Menzies, NC State University, presents at the 2015 HPCC Systems Engineering Summit Community Day. For Big Data applications, there is a lack of any gold standards for "good analysis" or methods to assess our certification programs. Hence, we are still in the dark about whether or not our human analysts are making the best use possible of the tools of Big Data. While much progress has been made in the systems aspects of Big Data, certain critical human-centered aspects remain an open issue. Regardless of the sophistication of the analysis tools and environment, all that architecture can still be used incorrectly by users. If this issue was confined to a small number of inexperienced users, then it could be addressed via process improvements such as better training. But is it? What do we know about our analysts? Where are the studies that mine the people doing the data miners? This presentation offers some preliminary results on tools that combine ECL with other methods that recognize the code generated by experienced or inexperienced developers. While the results are preliminary, they do raise the possibility that we can better characterize what it means to be experienced (or inexperienced) at Big Data applications.

Software evolution research is a thriving area of software engineering research. Recent years have seen a growing interest in variety of evolution topics, as witnessed by the growing number of publications dedicated to the subject. Without attempting to be complete, in this talk we provide an overview of emerging trends in software evolution research, such as extension of the traditional boundaries of software, growing attention for social and socio-technical aspects of software development processes, and interdisciplinary research applying research techniques from other research areas to study software evolution, and software evolution research techniques to other research areas. As a large body of software evolution research is empirical in nature, we are confronted by important challenges pertaining to reproducibility of the research, and its generalizability.
