- My brother’s nervous breakdown in 1980 prompted me to issue this warning. All of the anesthetized patients who previewed the presentation found it to be traumatic, while unanesthetized persons did not. - This message is all over the subtext; that’s how I know it’s true! Critics have consistently praised the reality behind the fantasy of The Empire Strikes Back , and that quality was a huge part of my coming of age in 1980. Although I didn’t suffer a nervous breakdown in the summer of 1980 as my brother had, the experience was nonetheless significantly traumatic. Now I fully understand what that reality is. Such things still go down in this century: in 2006, I had a colicky gallbladder, and was coerced into an upper GI endoscopy, which I should’ve canceled, because it would’ve revealed nothing about my GB. I had negotiated a verbal agreement to try it first with nothing before any sedation, but they reneged because of my anxiety of being separated from my friend and of the prospect of being sedated. I was also treated like an animal and was sedated against my will. Granted, I wasn’t anesthetized, but I was within arm’s reach of that hellhole, and, consequently, nearly had a nervous breakdown. But because I resisted it, I can describe it in detail: I could perceive light normally through my eyelids, and could hear muffled voices, but couldn’t understand a thing of what they were saying, which was devastating, because I rely so much on listening. I could perceive the passage of time, and could eventually feel the endoscope lightly in my throat. - Understanding Vader as the personification of the anesthetic proved to be the Rosetta stone for unlocking the film’s entire meaning. After that discovery, everything else just fell into place. The characters having the [expletive deleted] kicked out of them is exactly how I had put it in 1980. I composed almost all of this from memory, having not seen the film in years because I only had a VHS tape of it but haven’t had a working VHS player in years, and local outlets never having DVDs of Empire in stock for sale whenever I dropped in. Bram Stoker may have written Dracula with Vlad the Impaler in mind, but the real “undead” is Innocent III, who has reached from beyond the grave to destroy or ruin at least a billion lives over the past 700 years. - It is bitterly ironic that this forced anesthetization went down at the height of the Cold War, when the Right had been bitching “the end does NOT justify the means” for decades. Then they have the unmitigated gall to about-face and hide behind “we saved your life” with callous disregard for the iatrogenic collateral damage they had inflicted, leaving him barely able to speak. The only reason they saved his life is because his father’s insurance would pay more if he lived than if he died! What if the Good Samaritan had only helped the mugging victim under the condition of carnal knowledge? Since the peoples of the Mediterranean, Mideast, and South Asia are the world’s most hirsute, a certain example of his being treated like an animal was being shaved while anesthetized rather than conscious. Because he had resisted the anesthetic so vigorously, he certainly heard the sound of the shaver, accompanied by that of the surgical ventilator, and felt insulted, humiliated, and degraded. - Perhaps I wasn’t that far off the mark after all in my originally thinking that the film was about child abuse. It was actually child abuse outside the home as opposed to inside the home. A loving family was literally the thin blue line between Lucas and the shock machine. Just as there are a lot of so-called mental patients whose problem fundamentally is family abuse, war, sexual assault, disaster, or sexual slavery, there are certainly a lot whose problem is really anesthetization. I am a staunch, passionate, and outspoken proponent of the position that so-called “mental illness” has no biologic causes other than iatrogenesis, substance abuse, chronic noncaloric malnutrition, and environmental poisoning. - This was by far the hardest shoot in the entire cycle. More recent models of surgical ventilators heat the gas mixture, and IVs are now warmed, but chilling is still a major problem. - The other reason why anesthetization is a sexual fetish is because doctors derive sexual gratification from doing that to people. Consequently, any anesthetization that is unnecessary, either because the surgery itself is unnecessary, or can be performed with a nerve block, constitutes sexual abuse , even if penetration or fondling never occurred or was ever considered. - I don’t relish this, either, because I am such a horrible gagger that I have a coated tongue from being unable to brush it. Unless I use a compact brush, I gag while brushing my molars. Most people’s notions of the appearance of an anesthetized patient are outdated by over 50 years, and the disease cartel is intentionally keeping it that way. Masks are for induction only, after which they are replaced with endotracheal tubes, which are about the diameter of the patient’s finger. The tube can be either positioned in the center of the mouth and throat, or rotated to either corner of the mouth, depending on whether there are any particularly sensitive areas in the patient’s throat to be avoided. Either way, it is held in place by 2 long strips of paper tape across the mouth and wrapped around the cheeks. Occasionally, intubation is accomplished through a nostril instead. - He also beat impossible odds by making these films despite being so severely traumatized that he could barely speak! After decades of denial, the accumulation of evidence and the failure of all of the pathetic excuses offered by the disease cartel, such as nonexistent “microemboli” and “pump head,” are slowly but inevitably forcing this inconvenient truth out in the open. - While I had generalized the film’s meaning to family abuse, Kershner had generalized its meaning to militarism. Evidently, he had come from a military background. It’s about militarism all right, except it’s about medical militarism as opposed to the more familiar geopolitical militarism. Both the geopolitical militarism of the Battle of Hoth and the family abuse of the lightsaber duel at Bespin are metaphors for being anesthetized. - I have good genes, and several health care personnel have taken notice. I was supposed to have been a profound genius, but was robbed of my birthright by an early closed head injury that left me with a speech impediment, a manual dexterity impairment, and trouble with algebra. Had this not occurred, I would’ve been a college student near graduation seeing this movie at barely 17, instead of a high school student with a year to go. At the carbon-freezing scene, I would’ve blithely asked, “Why don’t they just anesthetize him? It’d be easier. It’d be less expensive. It’d be more predictable. It’d be safer. This way, he was likening the predicament on the plantation and during Jim Crow to the Ottoman Holocaust against Armenia during the First World War, and to the Soviet oppression of Armenia going on at the time. - William Morton and Charles Jackson, who publicly introduced surgical narcosis, both eventually died from bizarre neurological disorders from self-experimentation. Jackson had been demented for 7 years prior to his death. Ralph Waldo Emerson is the brother-in-law of Jackson, and the first well-documented person to have died from Alzheimer. - Even with hypoxia from hypoperfusion as a major issue, a supplementary nerve block could’ve easily spared him a double-digit stage. I believe in anamnesis more on Good Friday than on Maundy Thursday. Whenever abuse of any kind occurs, linear time momentarily dissolves, and the victim is there at Calvary, and Christ is on the cross, likewise there with the victim, suffering along with him/her. - Anesthetized patients can and do have feelings, so usage of child-directed speech is needed to dissuade them from destructive, violent sexual impulses. Lucas clearly had such impulses, which he can’t consciously remember, but nonetheless, they surfaced in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom . Fortunately, he also had uninhibited nonsexual thoughts while he was unconscious, significantly enriching Empire with social criticisms. The star destroyers of the Imperial fleet each represent a different capitalist industry, such as the military-industrial complex, the media, the beverage industry, the prison-industrial complex, the fossil fuel industry, the tobacco industry, etc. Vader’s ship, the massive Executor , represents the medical-industrial complex, and is bigger than all the others combined. The Death Star of the original 1977 opus had represented nuclear weapons, and its destruction had represented the advent of détente and prognosticated the eventual demise of the Soviet Union. Aboard all of the star destroyers, the crew literally worked at the commanders’ feet. During the first 2 acts, Han was very patriarchal towards Leia, but in the scene where they discussed where to seek refuge, his attitude changes, and he starts to treat her like a human being. This is the turning point of the whole movie, and it is for this ‘sin’ that he is frozen. The argument between Leia and Lando in the corridor represents the wedge driven between white women and peoples of color by the Nordic ruling class. - Had there been no brain damage, Howard the Duck would’ve been as cute as a button. Even so, I’d rather see either of those than exploitation films like Mr. and Mrs. Smith , Star Trek: First Contact , Hustle and Flow , or Black Snake Moan . Memphis can do better than the latter two! Quite a few native Memphians have vociferously complained about this, particularly about the disastrous effect of H&F on area youth of color. Why don’t they make a sequel called White Snake Moan , in which a white man has an Oriental woman chained, with the slogan “everything’s hotter in Southern California”? - He could understand very little, if anything, of what they were saying. For millions of years, there has been intense selection pressure for animals to awaken from type IV sleep (the deepest) at the sound of approaching predators or severe weather. Throughout our existence, human beings have also had intense selection pressure to awaken from type IV sleep at the sound of intruders or invasions. Women must also be able to awaken from type IV sleep when children cry. This is why every anesthetized patient should be given music over earphones, ideally patient-chosen music. - Any therapist worth one’s salt abhors secrets as the most destructive force of all. Any Jew or Christian worth one’s salt should recognize such secrecy as a flagrant violation of the 9 th Commandment. The hollow Nordic ruling and managerial classes mentioned in an earlier slide only nominally converted to Christianity because it had been the official state religion of the late Roman Empire, as they sought to legitimize themselves as its successors by adopting its last religion. - Between 1992 and 2003, I had anesthetized thousands of rodents. Those that went directly from induction to recovery and never experienced maintenance were completely unfazed by the experience, resuming their play as though nothing had happened! This is what anesthetization was in the 19 th century, because maintenance wasn’t invented until the turn of the 20 th century. However, every single solitary rodent that experienced maintenance was devastated and was never the same, even though the duration was only 5 minutes at no deeper than stage 4! - He certainly felt like he’d be on life support for the rest of his life. It wasn’t until a lawsuit for false imprisonment in the ‘80s that visitors were consistently allowed in the ICU. I do not know whether or not they made any exception for his immediate family. Who is allowed to visit is still contentious, particularly for sexual minorities. - The nerve block embodies the worldview of partnership, while anesthetization embodies that of domination. George Lakoff describes these competing worldviews as “nurturing” and “strict father,” respectively. The first story of creation in the Book of Genesis is told from the partnership perspective, while the second story of creation, which links anesthetization and misogyny, is told from the domination perspective. The order of these stories indicates that the vision of partnership had come first, and that the worldview of domination itself is the historical original sin. - One other great film came out in 1980: Brubaker . It didn’t get the Oscar for best picture, either. No one remembers the film that actually got it, except Lucas, Kershner, the director of Brubaker , the person who did get it, and me: a family drama about bereavement. This singularly sinful capitalist society has brainwashed the insured that anesthetization is as inescapable as death and taxes, and has brainwashed males of color and poor whites that incarceration is as inevitable as death and taxes. The message of Empire and of Brubaker , respectively, is that this is a patent lie. Anesthetization and incarceration (variants of the same thing) can and must be rare tragedies. - Ironically, Lucas was indirectly and inadvertently responsible for Ford’s anesthetization, by pressuring him into weight training for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom , which aggravated an old back injury. - This is why there are so many infernal euphemisms for being anesthetized. Another area of coldness and insensitivity is allowing anesthetized patients to regain consciousness still intubated and for them to suffer that way, when a minor surgical procedure can bring relief. As early as age 14, I noticed that whenever Lucas appeared in the media, I could tell that he had voice damage. Now I know that it was because he had been intubated for a long time. He was almost nonverbal when he was making these films in the ‘70s, but had he been nearly nonverbal while in school, he would’ve been labeled with Asperger’s syndrome and slapped into special ed in a New York minute. He would’ve never been admitted into film school with a special ed diploma and an autism spectrum label. - If I walk into a counseling office and tell the receptionist about how my mother had treated me, the response would be, “I can make you an appointment now. What day is good for you?” If I walk in and say, “I’ve been sexually assaulted,” the receptionist will reply, “We’ll work you in today.” However, if I walk in and say, “I’ve been anesthetized,” the receptionist will give me a puzzled look and reply, “So what?” Granted, if I had really been anesthetized, I certainly wouldn’t be able to drive to a counseling office and march in the door like that! - This was obviously part of a larger cover-up. Surgical narcosis is so out of control that it has become strategically significant, especially with the Soviet Union gone and Asian and Middle Eastern countries not needing the West’s protection anymore. The majority of the U.S. population has been anesthetized and is being propped up by a pseudoculture systematically engineered from top to bottom to keep them from having nervous breakdowns by avoiding their feelings. The Chinese Communist Party is the unwitting and undeserving beneficiary of an unanesthetized population and is poised for world conquest. Fortunately, the CCP also has an Achilles’ heel which can be exploited once the West is neutralized: its utter contempt for the environment and its total dependence on imported fossil fuel. When the West sinks in a sea of nervous breakdowns, Middle Eastern and tropical countries can easily bring the CCP to its knees and make the final kill with a fossil fuel embargo against the People’s Republic of China. No other health liberation issue has strategic significance, not even nutritional interventions for heart disease and cancer, or the unlikelihood of AIDS actually being an infectious disease. - Yes, I confess to having rescue fantasies. Some people have them about Marilyn Monroe, but I have them about anesthetized patients. Unfortunately, I’ve gotten too old to be able to heave one across my shoulder anymore. I guess I want to rescue my parents and brother, Dr. Pfautsch, etc. Let’s be realistic: Monroe was certainly gang raped under anesthesia, because her gallbladder had been removed 3 months before her suicide. No one—man, woman, child, demented, profoundly retarded, profoundly autistic, totally blind, quadriplegic, straight, gay, lesbian, queer, bi, trans, eunuch, castrato, or dead—could’ve possibly resisted committing indecency against the anesthetized Marilyn Monroe. Anyone who claims otherwise is being dishonest with oneself and with God. - Except for the Revolutionary War, the War between the States, and WWII, freedoms were not bought by soldiers but by the blood and suffering of radical activists . By the same token, except for serious injuries, burns, deformities, and defects, anesthetized patients are not there for health, but to advance careers . Children are anesthetized to advance their parents’ careers. Youth and middle-aged are anesthetized to advance their own careers and their spouses’ careers. Elderly are anesthetized to advance their adult children’s and adult grandchildren’s careers. That’s it. The foreign wars will never stop until something is done about surgical narcosis. The peace and justice movement has dropped the ball on alternative medicine. In turn, alternative medicine, in its well-intentioned zeal to abolish unnecessary surgeries, has dropped the ball on anesthesia reform. - Paralyzing muscle relaxants are also a significant issue in the movement against capital punishment. A personal listening system with a personalized playlist is an anesthetic-sparing technique. Most likely, having a loved one as a temporary guardian will also prove to be an anesthetic-sparing technique. Touching the airway with one’s lips and tongue is possible because, when free from muscle relaxants, anesthetized patients can respond to simple verbal commands. All of the lessons have 2 things in common: regulation and a worldview of partnership. I have additional reforms in mind besides those suggested by Empire : intravenous noncaloric nutritional support (from Derrick Lonsdale), aspiration of stomach acid to prevent reflux, EEG monitoring, repositioning every 2 hours, and massage to assist venous circulation and improve cardiac output. For victims of traumatic injuries or defects to the heart, the awful heart-lung machines should be replaced by Jarvik-type hearts, which provide superior perfusion, sparing the victims from stage 12. - Tchaikovsky’s suicidal despair is an excellent stand-in for the predicament of the anesthetized patient. Because I am the only one in my entire immediate family who has never been anesthetized, and that I am so different from any of them, this aspect of my medical history is a large part of my personal identity. Because much of my mother’s abuse was psychosexual, I resolutely eschew human sexuality to the point of advocating its abolition. This is why I’d be astoundingly resilient in the face of sexual assault, but utterly crushed by anesthetization, because the former would leave my identity untouched, while the latter would destroy it. My gift of hearing is another major component of my identity, which is why trying to salvage the auditory channel might be a way to save my sanity. A lot of bourgeois people don’t like me because I tend to be brutally honest. I just can’t live a lie. This includes being honest enough to have a nervous breakdown upon being anesthetized! I’ve wanted to see The Empire Strikes Back become an opera or an electronic musical for 20 years, but now that I fully recognize its significance, I want a bel canto opera all the more desperately. At this time, Arvo Pårt would be my first choice of a composer to transform the greatest film of the 20 th century into the greatest opera of the 21 st century. - After nearly 30 years, I finally got it. I finally let it in. :’-( I have wept bitter tears working on this. Part of my vision of world peace is a federal government with its capitol in Jerusalem, with hundreds of provincial capitols scattered around the world, and where corporations are abolished forever. Such a government should bring George Lucas to Jerusalem to present him with a plaque thanking him on behalf of the entire human species for his gift to humanity of The Empire Strikes Back , a lone cry in the wilderness for anesthesia reform.
