2. Dr. Robert Neville is the only man left alive after a viral epidemic which turns the infected into vampires has ravaged the world. Each night, Neville fights of vampires and each day fortifies himself for the next attack while searching for a cure. He has been conducting experiments on a number of subjects, including a member of the infected he has caught. The film takes place in 2012, in New York City. During the epidemic, government systems broke down, and the world fell into chaos. The city has grown over since the apocalypse, slowly reverting the city back to a world before people. Within this world, Neville has created an entire life with his dog, Sam. One day he is met with another human, Anna and a young boy, for the first time in years. She heard his radio signal and came to find him on her way to a colony she has heard of in Vermont. They are attacked, and they retreat to the lab he keeps in his basement. He realized once they are down there that the experiment he has been conducting on the captured infected has worked, but fails to calm the attack. He gives the antidote to Anna, who he makes escape while he throws a grenade at the attack, killing himself in the process of saving her and the boy. Anna and the boy reach the colony, and hand off the cure. “In 2009, a deadly virus burned through our civilization, pushing human kind to the edge of extinction. Dr. Robert Neville dedicated his life to the discovery of a cure and the restoration of humanity. On Sept 9, 2012, at approximately 8:49 PM, his discovered that cure. And at 8:52, he gave his life to defend it. We are his legacy. This is his legend. The light of the darkness.” I Am Legend (2007)

11. “just beneath the black-leather toughenss, kick-ass attitude, and heroic technique is a sweet message of self-empowerment and even self-sacrifice… In the end, if he does his duty by taking right and selfless action, with humility and discipline, he achieves the impossible, is rewarded with the love of the princess, and lives to star in another film already in production.” (Mellencamp, 88) “The overriding message of the film is that if our belief in ourselves remains steadfast, there is nothing we cannot accomplish or become.” (Mellencamp, 88) The Hero in I Am Legend
12. Robert Neville is a single survivor of the vampirism pandemic which took over the world. He lives locked away in LA, and spends his days rebuilding his house and tracking down sleeping vampires to kill. At night the vampires taunt him from outside his home, calling him by name. After a recent decline into alcoholism and depression, Neville decides to find a cure for the disease. He sees a woman, the first human in years, in daylight and captures her. She tells him her story of survival, but is strongly against killing vampires. After becoming close, he finds out she is getting ready to leave and begins to question her. She seduces him. She allows him to take her blood for testing, and then knocks him out. When he wakes, she is gone but has left a note explaining that she is from a vampire society which has developed through the mutation of the virus. They have developed some human characteristics, and can stand short periods of time in the sun. The society hates Neville, as in his day-time attacks he has murdered some of their members. He meets her again, and in his state of emotional disintegration, is taken prisoner by the society. The society is set to execute him for his actions, and Ruth slips him pills to “make it easier”. The novella ends with Neville looking out his prison window at the new and future society, and they stare back. He takes the pills, understanding that he is the last survivor of the “old race”, and the last living remnant of a dead society. Neville dies, laughing at the situation, his last thought being “[I am] a new superstition entering the unassailable fortress of forever. I am legend.“” I Am Legend, by Richard Matheson
13. In an alternate ending, which was rejected by audiences, the “butterfly” which is created by the lead attacking vampire signifies a butterfly tattoo on the infected woman he has been experimenting on. Neville realizes that they are only demanding her back. The lead vampire and Neville share an understanding stare, and he returns the woman. The vampires retreat, and Neville, Anna, and the boy lead for Vermont. The ending would have given “human” characteristics to the vampires, and explored the idea that they were creating a society. It would have put Neville’s actions throughout the movie in question without resolving them before the movie ended. “The Other” in I Am Legend
14. “The female agent, in both espionage fiction and intelligence history, is most of then sexualized, and her role confused to seducing the enemy. She is the screen onto which anxieties about female betrayal, male vulnerability, and alienation are safety projected.” (Wheelright, 293) “Since male sexual desire is something that cannot be controlled, it is viewed as an inherent weakness. The spy-courtesan represent the antithesis of the maternal bond; she is sexually independent, usually childless, and is often estranged from her family.” (Wheelright, 294) Ruth (1954, 1964) in contrast to Anna (2007) Women in I Am Legend (1954, 2007)
15. A 2007 Neville is sanitized – a father with a dog as opposed to an alcoholic bachelor A separate utopia of humans has survived, not a dystopia of the “new race” A world has been continued, instead of created Neville remains a “legend” for successfully helping to protect the old race, as opposed to a “legend” for the massacre of vampires. Humanity can only come from ‘us’ Women are still maternal and good, as opposed to childless and sexual Christian overtones, though through individual connections with God Government plans will fail, and we can only rely on ourselves Multimedia keeps us connected to each other, and to humanity Final notes from I Am Legend
