Symptoms include impairments in social interaction and communication as well as restricted interests and repetitive behaviors. There are various types of autism and treatments aim to help with social, emotional, physical, cognitive, language, and behavioral challenges through structural modifications, programs, resources, and partnerships with families.

Paper presented at Foundations of Digital Games 2015: While Erving Goffman’s work on frames has found broad adoption in game research, his sociological theory of gameplay enjoyment as “euphoric ease” has not been probed, although it is one of the few theories of gameplay enjoyment focusing what is absent in gameplay. Because spontaneous and socially demanded emotional involvement often align in gameplay, Goffman holds, it lacks the effortful self-regulation of conduct and emotion typical for everyday life. with autism face an incapacitating
life-long disability (Behrman et al.,
2000; Committee on Children with
Disabilities, 2001).
Although some researeh detailed
the lived experienee of what parents
of ehildren with autism faee (Cashin,
2004; DeGraee, 2004; Glass, 2001;
Gray, 1993, 1994, 2002; Woodgate,
Ateah, & Seeeo, 2008), the majority of
this work involved urban parents.
Few authors had researehed the expe-
rienees of families of ehildren with
disabilities who live in rural areas
(O'Callaghan, Allister, & Wilson,
2005; Seott-Findlay & Chalmers,
2001; Skinner & Sliflcin, 2007).
Moreover, no researeh was found on

enology was used to guide this inquiry, and interviews of 26 families served as
primary data. Thematic statements were isolated using van Manen's (1990)
selective highlighting approach. "Making the invisible, visible" emerged as the
essence of the parents' experience. Parents shared that although autism was an
invisible disability, they in fact made it visible in their constant battles to ensure
their child received the best quality of life. The major themes of this essence
included a) he's not the Rain Man, b) society's lack of knowledge and under-
standing, and c) doing it on our own. Findings from this study may be used to
guide program development that is concerned with improving the quality of life of
families of children with autism living in rural areas.

In his prologue to the Greek edition of Frith’s “Autism: Explaining the Enigma”, the paedopsychiatrist George Karantinos (1999) argues that the child with autism is not at all sly. Karantinos comments this autistic naiveness by adding that children with autism would never play to win.
Similar opinions reveal that our understanding of autism is influenced by social practices, positions, networks and privileges. Characteristically enough, the Greek Curriculum for Autism (Pedagogical Institute, 2003) supposes, with pessimism, that some children with autism will never learn to speak. And recently, Syriopoulou-Delli (2011) contends that the behaviouristic approach remains the dominant treatment of autism, even though behaviourism neglects intellectual problems. On account of such questions, autism and special education appear as complicated and serious political, ideological and social issues, where oversimplifications are absolutely inappropriate.
