The document discusses the growing demand for authenticity from customers and employees. In today's business world, being authentic and human wins over being rational and faceless. Companies that maintain a personal, human relationship with customers through openly discussing challenges and criticisms are more successful. The document recommends that organizations embrace their authentic, human nature through the three phases of awareness, acceptance, and action. This includes conducting authenticity audits, promoting understanding of different styles and generations, and accepting responsibility for issues rather than ignoring them. Embracing authenticity leads to greater employee engagement, trust, and better business outcomes.
Idealism and commercialism are not polar opposites. In fact, as counterintuitive as it may seem, sustainable profits are supported by sustainable idealism. Brand owners should not have to choose between idealism and profit, and profits based on a degree of idealism are more likely to be strong and sustainable over time. Businesses have come to recognize this and want their objectives, and those of their brands, to be attractive and easily defensible. While the economic crisis has tested some companies’ resolve, the fundamental factors that encourage them to espouse inspiring missions and defensible practices are unlikely to wane. Ogilvy has developed The big ideaL process to convey the ethos of the brand or company to people from different cultures and to employees and consumers alike.

This is an overview of a presentation on best practices in social media I gave to a law firm in Minneapolis. Since my background is advertising and marketing, I like to think about social media as it relates to and mashes up personal branding, your "individual" brand within a corporation and the corporation's brand. Which persona takes precedence--when, and why? Then how do your personas and their actions affect relationships with your customers? These are vibrant topics and I enjoy presenting them.

This is a keynote I did for the marketing team of a FMCG brand. Their question was: what should we be doing to make better campaigns for our brands and products? They are overwhelmed with choices: Should we use digital or classic advertising? Should we engage, activate or promote? Should we build fans and followers or not? I want to argue that the real challenge is not about going digital or not. It’s about being disruptive or not. Disruptive brands or products build audiences both online, offline and through word-of-mouth. Disruptive brands have a bigger impact and are more persuasive in converting prospects into buyers.
