Learning Objective: Discover which professional development learning path is better for your career.
The increasing rate of technology innovation and the expansion of globalization has led to a significant increase in the level of competition in STEM fields. Whether you’re new to IT, a recent STEM graduate, or an industry veteran there will always be a need to be relevant in order to move your career forward. The ongoing debate regarding the values placed on industry certifications versus a degree remains a topic of discussion with employers and employees alike. The results of these debates often lead to the unfulfilling answer of “it depends”. This interactive discussion will review some of those dependencies, debunk hiring myths, and provide real-world examples of how each professional development path can impact your career.
At the end of this seminar, participants will:
• Understand the demand signals that drive the need for new skills
• Debunk myths that occur during the hiring process and how value is attributed to candidates
• Identify methods to differentiate your resume in a pool of competitive candidates
• Review the ideas surrounding mastery vs. knowledge and how each is viewed
Timothy Pettee, chief investment strategist and lead portfolio manager at SunAmerica Asset Management, LLC, gives us a look at the rise and importance of dividends in U.S. markets.

How Energy & Utilities Must Adopt Intelligence Best Practices to Compete Against Disruptive Developments. This episode of the IntelCollab webinar series aired on May 25, 2016.
Implicitly or explicitly all competing businesses employ a strategy to select a mix
of marketing resources. Formulating such competitive strategies fundamentally
involves recognizing relationships between elements of the marketing mix (e.g.,
price and product quality), as well as assessing competitive and market conditions
(i.e., industry structure in the language of economics).

Understanding User Needs and Satisfying ThemAggregage
https://www.productmanagementtoday.com/frs/26903918/understanding-user-needs-and-satisfying-them
We know we want to create products which our customers find to be valuable. Whether we label it as customer-centric or product-led depends on how long we've been doing product management. There are three challenges we face when doing this. The obvious challenge is figuring out what our users need; the non-obvious challenges are in creating a shared understanding of those needs and in sensing if what we're doing is meeting those needs.
In this webinar, we won't focus on the research methods for discovering user-needs. We will focus on synthesis of the needs we discover, communication and alignment tools, and how we operationalize addressing those needs.
Industry expert Scott Sehlhorst will:
• Introduce a taxonomy for user goals with real world examples
• Present the Onion Diagram, a tool for contextualizing task-level goals
• Illustrate how customer journey maps capture activity-level and task-level goals
• Demonstrate the best approach to selection and prioritization of user-goals to address
• Highlight the crucial benchmarks, observable changes, in ensuring fulfillment of customer needs

2. Letter of Introduction
Dear University Students:
We are delighted to announce the third edition of a special award you can apply for that memorializes a long-time
contributor to the corporate intelligence world, James (Jim) Mathews. Aurora first introduced this award in 2012 in memory
and acknowledgement of the lasting professional contributions to the field of competitive intelligence (CI) made by Mr.
Mathews.
Having known Jim for nearly a decade, we viewed him as exemplifying the “gold standard” in terms of professionalism in the
business and competitive intelligence arena. He always loved to speak to students about entering and being in the
intelligence profession, and what a noble pursuit it was. More information about Jim has been included in the following
pages.
Please find enclosed the details that will enable you to compete for one of two (2) awards to allow you to attend the 29 th
annual international conference and exhibition of the Strategic & Competitive Intelligence Professionals (SCIP) in Orlando, FL
this spring (May 6-8, 2014) as a Jim Mathews Award recipient. As an award winning university student, your registration fee
will be covered by Aurora WDC to the conference’s general session. Additionally, each of the two award recipients will be
allocated an additional $500 stipend for meeting your travel-related expenses. Most importantly, you will signify to potential
employers your desire to achieve the levels of professionalism in your own career that Jim Mathews was widely known for.
Thank you for considering this opportunity to advance your Intelligence career and education, and do so in memory and
honor of a great individual and highly respected professional. Please feel free to reach either of us by email or phone to
discuss any questions you may have regarding submission.

Essay Questions
Please select one (1) of the following five (5) essay questions.
Prepare a 1,000 to 1,500 word, original essay as your response. You will be judged on writing quality and
the content of your answer. On a separate (cover) sheet submitted with the essay response, please be
sure to note how you meet each of the six criteria above, as well as providing your full contact details,
word count and any additional documentation directly relevant to documenting your qualifications.
1. Some members of the general public believe Competitive Intelligence (CI) practitioners are
“corporate spies.” Describe what steps you would take or recommend to your (current or
prospective) organization to help their stakeholders overcome this misconception.
2. Social media has become critical to CI practice in the last few years. Please describe the six most
critical things a company’s top executives must understand about social media in order for their
organizations to be successful from an CI perspective.
3. Most published examples of CI happen in large, publicly-traded corporations. Make a compelling
case that CI can and should be used to provide great value to either a) small and medium-sized
enterprises, or b) non-profit/not-for-profit organizations.
4. Effective CI practice is increasingly supported by automated digital processes, particularly specialized
software or web-based applications. Describe the key challenges and opportunities that
organizations face in trying to balance in practice the advantages and disadvantages that come from
employing specialized intelligence “solutions.”
5. Many business decision makers believe they do not need CI because they can find anything they
want by “Googling it”. Describe how you would convince your new, “Google-obsessed” boss, that
this self-service approach will not meet their or your organization’s competitive intelligence needs.
