Aurel Vlaicu was a Romanian engineer and pioneer of aviation born in 1882. He studied engineering in Budapest and Munich, obtaining his degree in 1907. In 1908, he returned to Romania where he built his first glider and began experimenting with flight. In 1909, he moved to Bucharest where he constructed his first airplane, the Vlaicu I. In 1911, he built the Vlaicu II, which he used to win several prizes at an air show in Austria in 1912, impressing spectators with his skills. Unfortunately, Vlaicu died in a plane crash in 1913 at the young age of 31, but he is considered a national hero in Romania for his accomplishments as one of the first pilots
