Radu Deac is considered the most important cardiac surgeon in Romania over the last two decades. He performed over 10,000 open-heart surgeries and 5,000 closed-heart surgeries. Some of his accomplishments include performing Romania's first complete heart valve replacement in 1983, participating in Romania's first heart transplant in 1999, and inventing artificial heart valves that bear his name. He received many honors over his career, including being named an honorary citizen of Târgu Mureș and receiving the National Order of the Star of Romania.
