RADU DEAC
BIOGRAPHY
• Radu Deac (b. February 28, 1940, Zalău, Sălaj county) is a
Romanian surgeon, considered "the most important cardiac
surgeon of the last two decades" in Romania. He performed
10,000 open-heart surgeries, 5,000 closed-heart surgeries and
35 transplants.
• In 2010 he retired, after being a professor of surgery at the
University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Târgu Mureș, head of
the Vascular Surgery Clinic in Târgu Mureș and president of
the National Society of Cardiovascular Surgery.
• On December 4, 2013, Radu Deac was appointed as executive
director of the National Transplant Agency.
• He is a full member and vice-president of the Academy of
Medical Sciences.[1]
• After high school studies in Sighisoara at what is now the
"Mircea Eliade" National College,[3] Radu Deac studied
medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Cluj.

Medical premiums
In August 1964, he succeeds in performing the first complete
surgical replacement of an animal's heart, that of a dog.
1983 - the first heart valve replacement with a biological valve
(in Romania).
1999 - participant in the first heart transplant operation in
Romania, and performed the second heart transplant in
Romania.
In addition to a vast activity in Romania (among which,
initiator of the 7 Institutes of Cardiovascular Diseases -
IBCvT), Radu Deac also has a rich activity abroad: between
1969-1970 he is a specialist at the University of Leeds, Great
Britain, where he is guided by Prof. Geoffrey Wooler, a
pioneer of cardio-thoracic surgery.
