This is a slide deck prepared for workshops with the Indo-Pacific Centre for health Security in November, 2018. It introduces the Atlas of Environmental Health and suggests how it could be used to assist the management of mosquitoes, and mosquito borne diseases, in the Indo-Pacific region.

Atlas of Environmental Health - Indo-Pacific Centre for Health Security
1. Presented at IPCHS Workshops, 23rd and 27th November, 2018
The Atlas of Environmental
Health
Piers Higgs, Rebecca Feldman and Peter Neville
2. Overview
• The Atlas of Environmental Health is a modular, web-
based platform developed for capturing, managing and
reporting on a range of Environmental Health data,
• It also has additional offline capable mobile applications
either in use or under development to assist in capturing
the data in remote areas,
• Development began in 2014 and has been in constant
improvement since that time – leading to a product with
considerable maturity and field testing
• It forms a key part of Medical Entomology management
(primarily mosquito management) within Western Australia
and Victoria
6. Medical Entomology Components
• Three main components across the web and the app:
• Adult Monitoring
• Larval Monitoring
• Public Complaints
• Also several web-only components, such as
• Detailed reporting
• Disease notifications
• Field guide
13. Ground Surveillance
A new app for a specific purpose – fast entry,
custom fields, but still supports broader workflows
– e.g. detection of exotics – into the single
centralised database
15. Regular Reporting
• Reporting from the field is coming in on a
daily basis from all the Local Government
Area staff across Victoria
• The Department of Health and Human Services can
review and read the situation on the ground daily
• Preparation of regular season reports is
possible quickly (and even quicker with
integration to Power BI)
• Extracting the data from the Atlas through the
existing functionality to then develop custom
reports is also possible.
16. Bureau of Meteorology
• Implemented automated retrieval of weather
information from the nearest weather station
• Also looks for the readings that are closest
in time to the sampling event
• Triggers a request and retrieval of weather data
into the Atlas as soon as trapping data reaches the
Atlas from field synchronisation
Public
API
Weather Data
17. “Barry”
• Barry is a local government environmental health
officer
• Contacts us regularly with any issues, and lets us
know exactly what does and doesn’t work for him,
which is a huge benefit!
• He’s part of the team - always ready to test and
trial new things, and to work with us on testing,
developing and delivering solutions
• This is a hugely valuable and positive experience
for us and helps us to develop better software.
19. Stock Management
• We have a chemical stock
management module in the Atlas
for chemical treatment
• Potentially expand that to include
medical stocks (Leanne’s talk)
• Could then have notice of where
medicines are; if routes blocked
then can look at alternative
sources of medical supplies
• This is the process we currently
support in Victoria for chemical
stocks
20. Implementations
• Depends on the preference for
collaboration and data
segregation
• Could have single- or multiple-
country based implementations,
depending on the need (driven by
jurisdiction or language)
• Could amalgamate to a single
instance or report to a bespoke
Indo-Pacific portal that
aggregates across multiple
instances
21. Internationalisations
• Would be happy to work with
groups to create international
versions that support multiple
languages
• Moving towards more icon based
designs in newer apps to assist
22. Breaking down silos
• The multiple silos of software are
becoming more and more
prevalent – how do we bridge the
gaps?
• There seem to be no obvious
data standards around this data
that us “young geeky techie
types” can rely on to be able to
transmit data between us (ALA
example)
• Open source is where we’re all
going, but we’re not (yet)
collaborating between groups…
