Atelier is a German word which means “STUDIO”. Atelier 5 is an
architectural company founded in Bern, Switzerland by the five
architects Erwin Fritz, Samuel Gerber, Rolf Hesterberg, Hans
Hostettler and Alfredo Pini.
The company built the Halen housing development between 1955
and 1962 in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland.
Inspiration
The 1958-62 realized from settlement Halen is known worldwide as a
seminal example in settlements after the Second World War . The
prototypical building and the work in the group are essential features of
the office. For this, the first striking reference to come Le Corbusier and
since the establishment of the office until today persistent preoccupation
with building concrete.
Unrestricted binding to the model of Le Corbusier characterizes the work
of the first year and is crucial for the cohesion of the group.

Characteristics
The composition of the team changes from task to task,
so that over time, each working with each and each
team member and critic. Characteristic of the Atelier 5
are:
• The critical attitude of the tasks compared to
• Intensive study of place and context
• Interest in design and structure
• The precise determination of the reference between
private and communal, public space.
• The emphasis on fitness for the individual and the
community
• The absence of formal gestures and architectural
quotes.
