Our Journey to the Cloud
speed
And now I am delighted to welcome on stage Phuah Aik Chong, CTO from Astro who will talk about how Astro has been leveraging AWS to transform their organization! Let’s start with a video first.
Good morning everyone and thank you AWS for the privillege to speak at this summit.
Over the last 2 decades, Astro has progressively grown to be the #1 media company in Malaysia. Today Astro is privileged to serve a great number of Malaysians. We do not take this responsibility lightly.
We are in 71% of Malaysian households, serving 21 million individuals on all screens whether at home or on the go. Our TV viewership now stands at 77% with our viewers tuning in 4 hours daily.
Our content capability particularly in vernacular content is a key strength. Last year, we produced approximately 13,000 hours of original vernacular content which resonates strongly and accounts for 75% of viewing time. We also license channels and individual IPs to operators in the region.
We engage with over 15 million radio listeners every week across 11 FM radio stations.
We are Malaysia’s number one local online media company with 5.8 million unique visitors a month.
HOWEVER, coming into 2017, we are now operating and competing in a New World with rapidly changing consumer behaviors.
In this New World, we compete in a GLOBAL landscape, we need to take a second to reflect and to consolidate our position by understanding our strengths and building on them
AND, at the same time, brutally acknowledging our weaknesses and addressing them.
Simplistically, our focus can be divided into 3 parts:
Digitalising our dominant legacy businesses
Gaining traction and scale for our digital startups, like our video streaming service Tribe in Indonesia and Philippines, ecommerce business in Malaysia and Singapore
Deepening our vertical strengths and building our innovation pipeline where we experiment on how to disrupt and disinter-mediate, and yes, even cannibalising ourselves
To accelerate our transformation, we have embarked on a 3-year digital transformation programme with the Professional Services team of AWS across all aspects of our business.
Our focus is to create a culture of innovation and accelerate our adoption of game-changing technologies.
Improving our ability to work and collaborate across the organisation through simplified processes, and empowering teams to experiment and learn so that we can transform Astro into a cloud first, mobile first, analytics driven organisation.
Cloud is not new to us.
Today we use Amazon S3 to host more than 23,000 on-demand titles for our connected set top boxes and OTT video streaming products. We have more than a thousand compute instances running on a daily basis, and deliver more than 2 petabytes of content every month using Amazon CloudFront CDN.
And to ensure we continue to deliver a seamless customer experience, we have invested in a direct link connecting both our broadcast centres to AWS Singapore Region.
The AWS cloud infrastructure enables agility and scalability. This helps Astro to expand its digital offerings rapidly in Malaysia and in the region, as well as providing a platform that allows us to experiment and innovate at a much faster rate, and much lower cost.
The technology workstream under this 3 year programme will further accelerate our transformation across:
Technology infrastructure
Application development
Building repeatable engineering best practices
While the main objectives in the business innovation workstream is to ensure we inculcate a sustainable innovation culture and lean enterprise practices throughout the company.
Every initiative, every project across the business is tied back to top-level business benefits. In doing so, we are moving heavily towards “Agile everything” and we are taking more control of our own destiny by embedding Product Owners in development teams, whether our own or partner’s.
We are happy to experiment, where there is a business benefit. We are evaluating spaces where we can use advanced services such as Alexa, IoT, and AI in our existing products and services, and also IN new areas.
Perhaps the most complex component of our transformation is reconfiguring ourselves
Changes to the way we govern day-to-day activities, define organisational boundaries, deploy financial resources, as well as human capital.
Naturally, in order to deliver this we will need to work with like-minded collaborators; from innovators and visionaries, to investors and technology partners.
This is the premise of our 3-year digital transformation programme with AWS Professional Services as an enabling partner, with a scope that spans our entire business.
We are 4 months into this, it is early days but working with the AWS team and learning about their spirit of invention has been inspiring for our teams.
In the centre of this transformation programme is our people.
The 3-year transformation programme involves ALL our employees across all levels incl the Board, providing equal opportunity for everyone to reskill, upskill, learn and to relearn.
At the same time, we are aggressively recruiting new talents to assist us in this journey, especially in our Products and Technology team. We are also building dedicated software engineering team with our partners.
We hope that through this transformation we will continue to stay relevant to our customers and to continue delivering the best products, services and experience to our customers.
I am truly excited with the journey ahead, and I look forward to the challenges, excitements and learnings. As we say at Astro, Game On!
Thank you.
