Word association is a method where a respondent is given a stimulus word and asked to respond with the first word that comes to mind. The stimulus and response words can have different semantic relationships such as being synonyms, antonyms, a hypernym or hyponym. There are two types of word associations: paradigmatic which involves stimulus and response words from the same category, and syntagmatic which involves stimulus and response words that are semantically related. Analyzing word associations can provide insight into the structure and dynamics of a person's lexicon.
