Fundraising online auction will be held via Facebook, with all proceedings going to the "Food for Thought" program, so that we can top-up our food, toiletries and household stock items held in our warehouse in Marateca (Lagos).
With the State of Calamity announced by the Portuguese government to restart on 15 September, we are expecting a massive increase of demand for food parcel support from individuals and families. Many with small children.
The massive economic impact this crisis has had on household finances, loss of jobs and the biting reality of poverty is something that we are well aware of, and we do not expect it to lessen until March/April 2021.
Available lots will be published in the auction Facebook group. All auction items can be seen during the period of the auction in our shop

Collina del Tiglio is a family owned winery in Piedmont, Italy. Our vineyards are located among the medieval towns and castles of Alto-Monferrato.
The 10 hectares of vines, some more than 50 years old, include Chardonnay, Cortese, Dolcetto, Barbera, and Cabernet Franc varietals. Our viniculture philosophy is a blend of personal attention and a modern approach.
Keeping organic principles in mind, Collina del Tiglio tries not to interfere with the natural Piemontese weather patterns and eco-systems.

1. Knowledge about a Specific Appellation (Region)
The name of the country that the wine is from is Portugal, and the main region of this
wine is Minho. There are also sub-regions, such as Monção, Melgaço, Lima, Basto, Cávado,
Ave, Amarante, Baião, Sousa and Paiva (winesofportugal.info).
In the past, the grapes were not able to grow well when the climate was cool and wet
because there was 60 inches of rainfall. However, vineyards are now slightly trained on
wires, so the grapes can be ripened by limited sunlight (winesofportugal.info). These grape
varieties are very green because almost 25,000 planters grow them in a warm and dry
conditions. These grapes are planted in “the Atlantic coastline between the Douro river to
the south and the Minho river to the north” ("Portugal's”). Along the river Minho, the soils are
fertile, granite, and sandy for the grapes to grow. Many grapes grow in the northern regions
of Portugal, so the growers harvest them early in order to not make the grapes over ripened.
As there are many mountains and river valleys, the vineyards are mostly planted on steep
slopes with rare soils (Gibson 240).
“Vinho Verde” is especially the largest
region of DOC (Denominacao de Origem
Controlada), which is well-known for the
highest quality of Portuguese wine laws.
This region is “located in the
northwestern province of Minho” (241).
These green grapes are harvested earlier
than in the other regions in order to keep
their natural acidity and lower ABV (241).

This wine has the biggest tour in Portugal, which is “Quinta da Aveleda”. It is a
guided tour, and has wine and cheese tastings on weekdays. The estate of this tour is located
in Penefiel surrounded by beautiful gardens. Since 1376, this tour has antique furnishing
and the guests can also go on a hunting trip in the winter. In addition, there is another estate,
which is called “Casa de Sezim”. It is a winery and guesthouse; the owners of this estate are
able to speak English (Parode 3).
2. Styles of Wines / Grapes
“Alvarinho, Avesso, Azal-branco, Batoca, Loureiro, Pedernã and Trajadura” (intowine.com)
are usually recommended as white wine grapes. “Zal Tinto, Borraçal, Brancelho, Espadeiro,
Padeiro de Basto, Pedral, Rabo de Ovelho, and Vinhão” (intowine.com) are authorized as red
wine grapes.
Alvarinho is the most popular white grape in northern Portugal. This grape has delicate
aromas, which are from peaches, passion fruits, lemon, orange zest, jasmine, and lychee. This
grape’s age is over five years young, and it grows well in the northern region of Monção and
Melgaço. Although these vines require vigorous care, the quantities of vine yield are low
(winesofportugal.info).
There are also popular red grapes, which are Touriga Nacional and Baga. Touriga
Nacional grapes are largely planted in northern Dao and Douro regions of Portugal. They
have dark-fruit flavors and firm tannins, with leather, spice, and violet. These varieties are
abundant in the Duo area and make up about 90 percent of the grape yield. Nowadays these
grapes have hundreds of clones. They are usually co-planted and blended with other grapes,
which are Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, and Tinto Cao. Therefore, they are role of the New
World wines (wine-searcher.com). Furthermore, the name of Baga means “berry” or “droplet”, and
the grapes are ripened in an especially dry and warm weather. They produce high-quality
5. Park and Cho 5
wines and are yielded in bulk. The grapes are harvested in the maritime climates, but
sometimes they have some threats from the rot-inducing rains. Overall, they have thick skins
and high acidity (wine-searcher.com).
When it comes to the styles, this type of wine is considered as sparkling wine. This
green wine has a delicate fruity flavor and is produced from the summer gardens. It goes well
with much seafood and meat. This wine has vermilion-to-purple colour and is sharp (Inc.
Fodor's Travel Publications 407). The wine is also known for the best dry and red wine in the
Duoro region of Portugal. However, the styles of this wine are vary from full-bodied red to
delicate and crisp white wines because of varied altitudes, valleys, and large lakes from
Switzerland (Sander and Bradley 91-92).
3. Three Major Wine Producers of Your Appellation
First, the winery in Portuguese wines is Quinta de Ameal, which is produced by
Pedro Araújo. He has 6 hectares of vines with Loureiro, which is the key varietal grape in

are medium-fertile and granitic and the grapes are fermented smoother and longer with
natural yeasts. His wines include the Soalheiro Alvarinho and Giro Sol Loureiro (Cerdeira).

Silva Ramos. This winery grows in Barcelos and Monção. It has 23 hectares of vines. The
