ASSIGNMENT 10
INTROTO MUSICVIDEOS
By Michael Ivan
The Buggles
■ The first music video on MTV was called “Video killed the radio star” it came out in
1980.
■ It was a huge commercial success reaching number one on 16 different national charts.
■ The artists who were recorded the music video wasThe Buggles, which included
Trevor Horn (Guitarist)Geoff Downes (Keyboard) and Hans Zimmer.
■ It cost 50,000 dollars and was shot in one day.
■ People complained it was too violent because aTV was blown up.
How have music videos evolved?
■ An example of how music have evolved is comparing it to a newer music video.
■ For example, looking at Michael Jacksons “Smooth Criminal OfficialVideo we can see
that…
■ It is much longer, it is 9 minutes compared to “Video killed the radio star” which was 3
minutes 35 seconds.
■ It cost around the same asThriller, about £500,000 compared to “Video killed the radio
star” which was only £50,000.
■ Was released in October 21, 1988 (1988-10-21).
They have also changed because…
■ Audiences enjoy watching MusicVideos (MV) repeatedly to see how we view the video
differently due to our expectations of it and additionally how the artists changes.
■ Audiences also enjoy references to other music texts or other MV’s, this is called
Intertextuality which will lead them to keep watching.
■ Audiences enjoy MV’s that repeat shot types, images, some edits, locations and the
choreography, this is pleasing to the eye and therefore makes them want to watch
more.
Repeated shot of the dog so the
audience can see it is cute and
funny and will laugh along with it
as they want to see more the dog
therefore they added more shots
of the dog from the beginning
and at the end.
List 2 music videos that you have watched
more than once and explain why…
■ Thriller and Smooth Criminal.
■ I chose “Thriller” as my first one because I enjoy the song, and the artist himself, in
addition, I believe that the narrative of the music video is very interesting and the
dance moves are very pleasing to look at.
■ I chose “Smooth Criminal” as my second choice as once again I enjoy the artist and
enjoy the song itself, furthermore, the iconic “anti-leaning” was a big thing and was
controversial in that music video, which made people want to watch the music video
to see what this “anti-leaning” move that everyone was talking about.
Choreography in Michael
Jackson MV’s was a big thing
and it was something which lead
to the success of them I believe
as they are really pleasing to
look at, therefore more people
will watch it.
Here is a list of top 25 most viewed

Visual Pleasure
■ Visual pleasure is where the producers use camera, editing, m.e.s and the use of
creativity to make the MV look more pleasing.
■ They do this so that more people will want to watch their music videos as they look
more pleasing.
■ A good example of a visual pleasure is “Hotline Bling” by Drake.
Drake combines the use of colours, the use of dance moves and the woman in the video to create this MV which
visually appealing. This is because of the different colour changes, the unique dance moves and the woman
flirtatiously dancing.
