The document assesses the practicum training programs of B.S. Tourism programs in selected universities in the Philippines. It examines components of the programs and their relevance to industry needs. Faculty, students, and industry practitioners were surveyed. Findings showed that the university programs generally complied with requirements and objectives, and helped enhance students' skills. However, respondents also identified problems like heavy class loads interfering with practicums and lack of exposure for students. The study aims to help improve practicum programs based on stakeholder feedback.

This paper is anchored on leadership and women in tertiary education in Cameroon with a focus on productivity from the perspective of these women. The review dwells on the premise that possibilities for floundering among women leaders abound with adverse consequences on their productivity. There are multifold concerns regarding women in leadership positions within higher education institutions ranging from ability to manage work and family responsibilities, difficulty of receiving adequate mentoring from women with greater longevity and issues related to gender bias. While these adversities exist, there is seemingly a low key empathetic and supportive response from their male counterparts. Albeit these challenges, this paper examines the status quo through the lenses of a conceptual review to comprehend what literature has posited in respect to the topic under discourse. While the paper acknowledges the paucity of empirical works that have investigated the topic within the context of Cameroon, calls are equally made for more research to understand women in leadership positions within higher education institutions in Cameroon as well as some possible recommendations to remedy the challenges they face. Primarily, the male administrators may engage in behavioural adjustments towards female colleagues, support the activities of their female counterparts due to their extra responsibilities and equally show more empathy to their female co workers. This study evaluated of the student development programs among state universities in Samar Island. The four 4 SUC's in Samar Island were selected as the locale of this study. These were the University of Eastern Philippines Main Campus Catarman , North West Samar State University Main Campus Calbayog City , Samar State University Main Campus Catbalogan City and Eastern Samar State University Main Campus Borongan City with the university presidents, deans directors of the Student Affairs and Services, personnel, and students as respondents. Frequency counts, percentages, and weighted mean computations were used to analyze the descriptive data obtained from the respondents of the study who were chosen through complete enumeration for presidents, deans directors and personnel and random sampling for the students, respectively. As to status of implementation of the students' development programs and services, the respondents rated the following programs and services as “very satisfactory†cultural development program, leadership training program, multi faith services, social and community development program, sports development program, student organization and services, student publications, and student council government. Tourism is a new industry and had been undergoing transformational curriculum development at graduate level. Since 1980s the curriculum had been changing to solve contemporary issues. The most current programme is Sustainable Tourism at Master level which has not been introduced in Developing countries such as Kenya. However, the countries offering the programme are also still searching on how to improve the effectiveness of the course to suit tourism industry.
The purpose of this paper is to propose to higher learning institutions to introduce Strategic Sustainable Tourism at post graduate particularly at masters’ level. To make master students aware of what is happening in both the curriculum development and contribute to its effectiveness of tourism industrial development. Finally to increase employability of graduate students of tourism at master levels. The programme is expected to suite effective learning and analytical skills to be used through both class room lectures and field work. The method used is literature content analysis and reviews of some master programs undertaken in Kenyan Universities in the areas of tourism.
The literature which showed the need for transformative curriculum development that suits students’ personal development and increase their employability in the industry and contribute to curriculum development. The expected prospectus is both international tourism agencies, local tourism industries and Governmental and Non-Governmental Agencies

The tourism and hospitality industry is struggling with the issue of attracting and retaining quality educated employees. It has led to a shortage of skilled personnel to staff the growing tourism and hospitality businesses, after the COVID 19 Pandemic. The job turnover rate in the tourism and hospitality sector rose due to the contemporary situation in the world. Especially, the promogulated lockdown and travel ban adversely affected the job security of the employees in the tourism and hospitality sector. Thus, the objective of this study is to identify the effect of undergraduates’ perception on career selection in tourism and hospitality industry. A total of 120 undergraduates representing three state universities were selected using stratified sampling method for this study. Primary data was collected via structured questionnaire. Quantitative data analysis methods along with the descriptive, correlation and multiple regressions were utilized to analyze the data using SPSS. Results confirmed that personal factors, educational factors and industrial factors impact on the willingness of career selection in tourism and hospitality industry. Moreover, personal factors are most influential to the career selection of undergraduates. Thus, Universities must enhance the opportunities for practical exposures, attitude development, sign memorandum of understanding, updating curriculum to shape the undergraduate perceptions.

The work context and the society’s dynamism of the century XXI require - professionals who possess high qualification, skills of communication, with the handling of technological tools, the capacity of adaptation and consciousness of contribution for the social and economic development of its environment, with a vision of a globalized world. Developing these profiles marks a milestone for higher education institutions, what make them focus in the search of strategies for their graduates to achieve a successful inclusion in different professional, academic and multicultural contexts (Luchilo, 2006). Between such strategies highlights the implementation of programs of student mobility, which give place to a contemporary migratory phenomenon in response to the internationalization of the information, the knowledge and the technology (Fittipaldi et al., 2012). This article presents the results of a study conducted on the experiences of the students of the Unidad Profesional Interdisciplinaria de Ingeniería campus Guanajuato (UPIIG), belonging to the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), that have participated in calls of student mobility, analyzing the advantages, disadvantages, challenges and areas of opportunity for the institutional program.
Reflections on tourism higher education: Innovation and ChangeBabu George
The present presentation provides some intensely personal reflections about the past, present, and future of tourism higher education, with special focus on India. The presenter highlights forces of continuity and change in the historical development of tourism education. In addition to more trivial issues such as curriculum design, instruction, and campus placements, deeper currents that manipulate the system such as authority and dogma are touched upon. Special mention is accorded to the historical factors that resulted in the current state of institution development and the future outlook. The presenter worked as a faculty member in one of the Central Universities of India teaching tourism before he migrated to the United States six years back, which gives him the unique vantage point of an ex-insider. While no grand design is offered as a panacea, it is hoped that the discussion contained here will help clarify the issues better, which is the first major step in identifying meaningful solutions.

The desire to plan and manage vocational education adequately as an investment for economic and human resource is reinforced by studies in the field of educational economics such as UNESCO and UNICEF through advocacy for „Equitable, Quality Education and Lifelong Learning for All‟ as the main goal for education. In third world countries, large numbers of graduates from formal schools are unemployed. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to gather information about planning and managing technical and vocational education in polytechnics with priorities in training trends and prospects. The objectives of the study were to: find out instructors‟ perceptions about instructional methodologies employed by youth polytechnic instructors; examine trainees‟ and instructors‟ views about training tools, equipment and materials at their disposal as the necessary implements towards acquisition of vocational skills and knowledge. The study adopted survey research design. The study population was 1880. Census and purposive sampling were used to draw a sample of 31.06% informants. The study employed questionnaires, interview schedules and checklists for collect data. Data were presented in percentages, pie charts, frequencies, bar graphs and ratios. A major finding was that agriculture trade was offered as common a course to first years only. Community‟s negative attitude towards vocational training discouraged youths from enrolling at YPs. 72.8% respondents observed that YPs were poorly enrolled. 79.9% trainees reported instructors demonstrated skills while trainees explained them. Some trainees shared tools during practicals. 93.1% instructors were ICT illiterate. Few YPs had automated tools/equipment and trade workshops were poorly equipped. The study concluded that YPs were in dire need of instructors, adequate training tools/equipment, materials and workshops. The study recommended that County Government building a YP in every location and craft comprehensive policies on financing/staffing of YPs.

determining positive and negative aspects is of great importance. This study aims to determine
the cognitive perceptions of students’ internship and whether different before and after this stage.
Qualitative data which was collected by Word Association Test (WAT) analyzed
with MAXQDA Software. According to the results, the perception of students completed
compulsory internship is more negative than the others. The negative statements which express students’ problems, complaints and fears are work conditions, mobbing, social life,

It has led to a shortage of skilled personnel to staff the growing tourism and hospitality businesses, after the COVID 19 Pandemic. The job turnover rate in the tourism and hospitality sector rose due to the contemporary situation in the world. Especially, the promogulated lockdown and travel ban adversely affected the job security of the employees in the tourism and hospitality sector. Thus, the objective of this study is to identify the effect of undergraduates’ perception on career selection in tourism and hospitality industry. A total of 120 undergraduates representing three state universities were selected using stratified sampling method for this study. Primary data was collected via structured questionnaire. Quantitative data analysis methods along with the descriptive, correlation and multiple regressions were utilized to analyze the data using SPSS. Results confirmed that personal factors, educational factors and industrial factors impact on the willingness of career selection in tourism and hospitality industry. Moreover, personal factors are most influential to the career selection of undergraduates. Thus, Universities must enhance the opportunities for practical exposures, attitude development, sign memorandum of understanding, updating curriculum to shape the undergraduate perceptions.

Developing these profiles marks a milestone for higher education institutions, what make them focus in the search of strategies for their graduates to achieve a successful inclusion in different professional, academic and multicultural contexts (Luchilo, 2006). Between such strategies highlights the implementation of programs of student mobility, which give place to a contemporary migratory phenomenon in response to the internationalization of the information, the knowledge and the technology (Fittipaldi et al., 2012). This article presents the results of a study conducted on the experiences of the students of the Unidad Profesional Interdisciplinaria de Ingeniería campus Guanajuato (UPIIG), belonging to the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), that have participated in calls of student mobility, analyzing the advantages, disadvantages, challenges and areas of opportunity for the institutional program.

The present presentation provides some intensely personal reflections about the past, present, and future of tourism higher education, with special focus on India. The presenter highlights forces of continuity and change in the historical development of tourism education. In addition to more trivial issues such as curriculum design, instruction, and campus placements, deeper currents that manipulate the system such as authority and dogma are touched upon. Special mention is accorded to the historical factors that resulted in the current state of institution development and the future outlook. The presenter worked as a faculty member in one of the Central Universities of India teaching tourism before he migrated to the United States six years back, which gives him the unique vantage point of an ex-insider. While no grand design is offered as a panacea, it is hoped that the discussion contained here will help clarify the issues better, which is the first major step in identifying meaningful solutions.

The desire to plan and manage vocational education adequately as an investment for economic and human resource is reinforced by studies in the field of educational economics such as UNESCO and UNICEF through advocacy for „Equitable, Quality Education and Lifelong Learning for All‟ as the main goal for education. In third world countries, large numbers of graduates from formal schools are unemployed. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to gather information about planning and managing technical and vocational education in polytechnics with priorities in training trends and prospects. The objectives of the study were to: find out instructors‟ perceptions about instructional methodologies employed by youth polytechnic instructors; examine trainees‟ and instructors‟ views about training tools, equipment and materials at their disposal as the necessary implements towards acquisition of vocational skills and knowledge. The study adopted survey research design. The study population was 1880. Census and purposive sampling were used to draw a sample of 31.06% informants. The study employed questionnaires, interview schedules and checklists for collect data. Data were presented in percentages, pie charts, frequencies, bar graphs and ratios. A major finding was that agriculture trade was offered as common a course to first years only. Community‟s negative attitude towards vocational training discouraged youths from enrolling at YPs. 72.8% respondents observed that YPs were poorly enrolled. 79.9% trainees reported instructors demonstrated skills while trainees explained them. Some trainees shared tools during practicals. 93.1% instructors were ICT illiterate. Few YPs had automated tools/equipment and trade workshops were poorly equipped. The study concluded that YPs were in dire need of instructors, adequate training tools/equipment, materials and workshops. The study recommended that County Government building a YP in every location and craft comprehensive policies on financing/staffing of YPs.

Tourism and hospitality education fills the need of skilled employees for tourism industry. Turkey has many vocational schools which provide the qualified personnel need. Students
training in these institutions concerned carry out compulsory internships in tourism enterprises. Internship is a beneficial process that leads students the opportunity to transform their theoretical
knowledge into practice. However, many problems exist during the internship. During this period, interns recognize both the sector and themselves further. Positive perceptions of
internship period increase the willingness of students to work in the tourism industry after graduation. So defining the students’ perceptions and complaints during the internship and
determining positive and negative aspects is of great importance. This study aims to determine
the cognitive perceptions of students’ internship and whether different before and after this stage.
Qualitative data which was collected by Word Association Test (WAT) analyzed
with MAXQDA Software. According to the results, the perception of students completed
compulsory internship is more negative than the others. The negative statements which express students’ problems, complaints and fears are work conditions, mobbing, social life,

in Selected Universities: Basis for Proposed Practicum Training

Abstract
This study intends to assess the Practicum Training Program of B.S. Tourism of selected universities in the
Philippines in terms of selected components and its relevance to industry needs. The descriptive method was
used to expound on the actual situation and the concerns of the personalities involved in the study with the use of
the questionnaire as the major gathering tool. Three groups of respondents were selected for this study. The first
group was composed of faculty members; the second group was comprised of students while the third group
consisted of the industry practitioners from selected hotels and travel and aviation agencies. Findings revealed
that the features of the B.S. Tourism curricula of the selected universities in terms of course outlines,
qualifications of school administrators and faculty members, and facilities and equipment are very relevant to the
requirement of the Commission on Higher Education. The practicum training programs are generally effective
particularly in terms of the attainment of the course objectives, as assessed by the respondent tourism graduates
and faculty members. Moreover, practicum training programs of the selected universities are relevant and
beneficial in enhancing the self-development, job knowledge, communication skills and customer relations skills
of the tourism graduates, as assessed by both the respondent tourism graduates and industry practitioners.
However, the conduct of the practicum training programs of the selected universities is beset with problems and
the most common problem identified by the respondents is the heavy class loads for students, that is, practicum
being taken simultaneously with other major subjects. Other problems identified by most of the respondents are
the incongruence of the classroom learning experiences to practicum learning objectives and that students do not
get enough exposure in the field.

Introduction
The tourism industry has become a major stimulus for economic development in developed and developing
countries and even in underdeveloped countries that are struggling to bring money in under uncertain economic
circumstances. For instance, Cruz (2004) cited that tourism is highly regarded as a major economic and cultural
activity in the Philippines. This is highlighted by tourist arrivals in the Philippines which have grown to almost
twenty times since the adoption of mass tourism in 1973. This explosive growth of tourism has been brought
about by both external forces and deliberate policies of the government. However, a recent assessment of
tourism industry in the Philippines by the World Tourism Organization (WTO) led to reveal that the Philippines
is yet to fulfill its considerable potential and establish itself as a premier tourist destination is Asia, taking
advantage of the increasing development of the Asia Pacific region into one of the world’s fastest growing
tourist regions. Consequently, it has fallen behind with many of its neighbors, who have achieved substantial
rates of tourism growth and development even in the most trying of circumstances. Despite many political,
economic and nature based factors having a significantly negative impact on Asian tourism in recent years,
countries such as Thailand and China have managed to overcome these obstacles and strengthen or at least
maintain in their market position. In the light of the existing circumstances and with the assistance of WTO
specialist, a series of policies have been formulated with a view to reviving tourism in the Philippines, through
socio-economic development, tourism sector development, as well as short and long-term policy actions. The
tourism industry consists of firms and people who serve the needs of travelers, direct providers such as airlines,
the hotel sector, restaurant, travel agents, shops selling goods, and this requires staffs who can convey a high
level of service. Hospitality enterprises develop as a direct consequence of the development of the tourism
industry and this turn, boosts the local economy in terms of jobs growth, bringing in travelers and revenue.
Literature Review
According to Lockwood and Medlik (2002), the tourism and hospitality industry is one of the world’s major
industries and so greatly influences the world’s economic development, countries balances of payments,
employment and regional balances. They are also important socially, culturally, environmentally for those
become tourists and for their hosts. The Arthur Anderson report (2004) labor shortages on the horizon” cited that
training in the accommodation sector remains an “in-house” activity with on-the-job training as the most
common practice to train front-line employees. Herein lays the polarization which exists between industry and

The Word Tourism Organization (WTO) (cited in Escoffier and Remington), 2002) defines tourism as
“the activities of persons traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one
consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes. Braun Stein (2002) cited that a major benefit of the
practicum training program was the opportunity for employers to screen potential future employees. This means
that the practicum training program was seen by employers as part of an effective graduate recruitment strategy
leading to leading to reduced costs of recruitment and training and better graduate retention rates.
Boud, Solomon and Symes (2001) cited ‘work-integrated-learning (WIL) and work-based-learning” as
terms used to describe a class of university programs that bring together universities and work organizations to
create new learning opportunities in workplaces. Robothan (2004) explains that the amount of learning that
trainees transfer from the training room to the work place depends mainly on two aspects of the workplace
conditions, the degree of similarity between what occurs in the workplace and what was learned in the training
program and how easily the trainees can integrate into the work environment the skills or knowledge gained in
the training program. Sison (2003) identified that one of the type of training is the “learners in the industry” and
these are usually graduating students in college who are required to gain experience as a requirement for
graduation. Cubit’s (2004) study was to understand from the describe experiences of disadvantages individuals
enrolled in a technology-based job-training program what their views were of the various components of the
training program.
Methodology
The descriptive was used to expound on the actual situation and the concerns of the personalities involved in the
study. According to Best (2001) the descriptive method typically employs’ a survey or an assessment approach
for its purpose is to collect information that permits one to discuss the characteristic of person and their
perceptions. Three groups or respondents were selected for this study. The first group was composed of thirty
(30) faculty members of five (5) selected colleges and universities The second group of respondents was the
student group composed of one hundred fifty (150) B.S. Tourism graduates The third group was composed
of (50) industry practitioners from selected hotels and travel and aviation agencies in the country.
The Findings
In the analysis and interpretation of data and the findings of the subject based on the results of the
study.

Table 5 shows the assessment of the respondent tourism graduates regarding the practicum training programs of
B.S. Tourism of the subject schools in terms of training content. The respondent tourism graduates posted
“agree” responses on all items with average weighted means ranging from 3.92 to 4.16.
Conclusions and Recommendations
Based on the significant findings of the study, the following conclusions are drawn: Firstly, the features of the
B.S. Tourism curricula of the subject schools in terms of the course outlines, qualifications of school
administrators and faculty members, and facilities and equipment are very relevant to the requirement of the
Commission on Higher Education as evidenced by their very high level of compliance to the minimum
requirements set by the CHED memo No. 31, Series of 2001. Secondly, the practicum Training programs of the
subject schools are generally effective particularly in terms of the attainment of the course objectives, as assessed
by the respondent tourism graduates and faculty members. To conduct of the practicum training programs of the
subject schools is beset with problems and the most common problem identified by the respondent faculty
members, tourism graduates and industry practitioners is the heavy class loads for students, that is, practicum
being taken simultaneously with other major subjects. Other problems identified by most of the respondents are
the incongruence of the classroom learning experiences to practicum learning objectives and that students do not
get enough exposure in the field.
It is recommended therefore that the selected schools should not only put in meeting the minimum
requirements set by the CHED but should further improve its B.S. Tourism curricula to be at par with
international standards since the trend now is globalization. This could be achieved by establishing stronger
linkages with the tourism industry and by increasing industry’s presence on the advisory board of the B.S.
Tourism in the Universities/colleges. Their influence would help develop and design curriculum format
applicable to industry needs. Likewise, monitoring techniques employed in the practicum training program
should be improved while expanding the program to provide optimum work experience of the tourism students.
Also, to develop methods of electronic monitoring by the faculty coordinator/advisor to assess the tourism
student’s process in a timely manner. Bi-weekly or monthly student portfolio could be completed on-line for
direct submission to the faculty coordinator/advisor facilitating timely feedback on student progress. And lastly,
concerned education officials and universities/college officials should consider the institutionalization and
adoption of the proposed manual/guidelines for the conduct of the practicum training program for the B.S.
Hospitality Management (HM)/Tourism degree in this study.
