This document summarizes a presentation given by nursing students to nurse leaders on burnout. It discusses how burnout can negatively impact nurses physically and mentally and deteriorate their personal and professional lives. The presentation aimed to educate nurse leaders on identifying and preventing burnout. The nursing students realized nurse leaders face high stress levels and increased risk of burnout from complex responsibilities. The students overcame feelings of inadequacy by thoroughly researching and rehearsing their presentation.

Concept Synthesis Paper on Personal Nursing Philosophy
The purpose of this paper is to identify, describe, and apply the concepts that underlie my personal nursing philosophy. I will give a brief overview of my nursing background, identify and describe the four metaparadigms of nursing, provide two other practice specific concepts that apply to my practice, and include a numbered list of five propositions that apply to those concepts.
Nursing Autobiography
When I was little, I dreamed of becoming a flight attendant, a lawyer, an architect, and a doctor. I never saw myself become a nurse someday. I must admit that my only motivation for pursuing a nursing degree in college was to get to the United States and make good money. But I didn't think that I would someday love the profession I never even imagined doing. It is for this reason that I believe that nursing is a calling. Being a nurse has its bittersweet moments and surely takes a lot of compassion, patience, empathy, and strength. While it's true that the long hour shifts can be physically exhausting, it's witnessing the most devastating situations in life that make this profession very challenging. On the contrary, our ability to heal, save lives, and make a difference in our patients' lives and their families, truly is very rewarding and incomparable to nothing. Being a nurse for almost five years has opened my eyes and changed my views about life and all other things. I first started working on a Telemetry/Neuro floor for about a year and a half before I decided to venture out and ended up working in an extremely busy ER in downtown Jacksonville, FL. I worked there for two years, and though it was a highly stressful environment, I enjoyed almost every minute of it. The ER has the kind of culture that is fast-paced, task-oriented, informative, and team driven. Having passed my certification in emergency nursing (CEN) recently, I can say that my knowledge base, assessment, and critical thinking skills, which I often use to guide me in my clinical decision making, have significantly improved since I became an ER nurse. It has molded me into a strong, hard-working, and competent nurse that I am today.

Burnout is a very common condition across the world and especially in the nursing
career. It's the reduction in the energy and zeal of nurses manifesting in form of being
emotionally exhausted, lacking motivation, feeling frustrated, fatigued, and low reaction time
which reduces individuals' output and work efficacy in general. Burnout has been strongly
attributed to the deficit in the number of healthcare professionals, a concern that goes way to be a
matter of global importance. The rapidly changing healthcare landscape that brings a paradigm
shift to increased demand for healthcare services in the world population has come with its
challenges. Although experts associate the change to improvement in the quality of life for which
people become capable of seeking healthcare services, the move has placed a lot of pressure on
not only the healthcare systems but particularly on the workforce (Mudallal, Othman, & Al
Hassan, 2017). However, governments have not moved at a similar pace to address these
pressures, leaving the mantle on the health institutions and professionals. To be specific, nurses,
as well as other healthcare providers, are left with a large number of patients to takes care of, a
number that keeps on increasing day after day, keeping them on the run all the time. The absolute
result of this healthcare environment is burning or wearing out, which without doubt minimizes
the efficacy of the nurse’s output.
The working environment for which the nurse staff doesn't match the care demand
culminated by poor leadership creates unattractive working conditions. Indeed, WHO reports
indicate that shortages of nurses would nationally and internally interfere with the efforts to
health and well being of the world population. Where staff shortage exists, human resources are

overstretched, working conditions become poor and unbearable, work becomes increasingly
hazardous to the health of the nurse- they get no rest, become stressed, productivity decrease
with the poor patient outcome which add up to the trauma of the workers. They end up losing
interest in their job, become highly dissatisfied, burnout and increase the chances of quitting the
job. In return, the turnover of nurses affects the quality of healthcare services offered because of
a lack of expertise and increasing the workload burden on the remaining staff (Sobral, et. al,
2018). .

Health care needs of returning military and their families
Deployment, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), balancing family with long work hours are all part of an everyday military life. Mental, physical and social changes occur on a daily basis, affecting the health care needs of our military. However, events and issues like these can affect veterans and their families throughout their lives, even though they deserve the best, veterans can be neglected. From personal experience, military life is unique. A community within a community, fighting for our nation’s best interest. This paper reflects how we as nurses can be the best advocate for them.
Health Care Needs
Looking at health needs of veterans and their families, they can be physical, psychological or psychosocial. Physical includes combat injury which links closely with psychological concerns including PTSD and substance abuse: drugs and alcohol (

-Black, 2012). Psychosocial effects the family directly, including marital, financial instability and social isolation. Together all these have a significant impact on the everyday life, and the reorientation from deployments and adjustment back into the community (

Nurses are in the
frontline
of health care. Therefore, nurses are in the critical position to speak out and be the best advocate for our clients (Laureate, 2012). However, providing safe and high-quality health care is a collaboration effort, working in unity with other health care professionals and administrators (

, 2016). The American Nurses Association (ANA) operates in unison with the Veterans Health Administration and the Department of Defense as advocates to improve veterans’ health care needs. Another valuable advocacy agency is Mental Health America; with over 200 associates in 41 States, they provide both current and former military with information to prevent the stigma related to mental health issues like PTSD and addiction, assisting in the reintegrating into family life (Mental Health America, 2016). With nurses working in unison with organizations like these, promotes success for implementing and changing public health policy.

Nursing shortage factors include: nursing school enrolment is not growing with the demand, a significant portion of nurses are nearing retirement age, and insufficient staffing driving nurses to leave the profession (AACN, 2021). One area, in particular, that is sensitive to nursing shortages, and retention is correctional nursing. "Retention of nursing staff is more complex in a correctional facility" (Chafin & Biddle, 2013). One study noted only 20% of the nurses remained employed after three-years at this particular facility (Chafin & Biddle, 2013).
In a correctional facility, the primary focus is given to security, with healthcare being second. Providing care within a correctional setting is very different than a hospital setting. Facility security is always the focus and drive. How a nurse interacts with patients (inmates) within a facility is vastly different from a non-correctional environment. Being overly friendly or nice can wreak havoc and be deemed "over familiarizing" with inmates or been seen as a weakness by inmates creating a safety concern (Walsh, 2009). The correctional setting comes with its inherent dangers and stressors, leading to nurses' high turnover.
The prison I was formerly employed with has significantly reduced nurses due to terminations and resignments. As an employee with the Michigan Department of Corrections, a nurse can be pulled from any facility to fill the needs of another facility at any given time of which has recently happened. Marquette Branch Prison is to have nine registered nurses in total, and right now, they only have four RNs employed there. The facility has tried to offer signing bonuses to retain RNs. They have changed some procedures to make it safer for the nursing staff, such as correctional escorts when going to the cells, and have reached out to contract agencies to secure nurses. However, none of these measures have led to success. As the shortage increases, the remaining nurses are forced to work more overtime in an already demanding and stressful environment leading to an even faster turnover and increased safety concerns.
Living in a rural area already stresses the number of nurses available, and trying to recruit and retain nurses within the correctional system proves to be an even harder strain. is as unrealistic as expecting to be able to walk through water without getting wet” (Remen,
1996)
What is compassion fatigue?
Our primary task as helping professionals is first and foremost to meet the physical and/or
emotional needs of our clients and patients. This can be an immensely rewarding experience,
and the daily contact with patients is what keeps many of us working in this field. It is a
Calling, a highly specialized type of work that is unlike any other profession. However, this
highly specialised rewarding profession can also look like this: Increasingly stressful work
environments, heavy case loads and dwindling resources, cynicism and negativity from co-
workers, low job satisfaction and, for some, the risk of being physically assaulted by patients.
Compassion Fatigue has been described as the “cost of caring" for others in emotional and
physical pain. (Figley, 1982) It is characterized by deep physical and emotional exhaustion
and a pronounced change in the helper’s ability to feel empathy for their patients, their loved
ones and their co-workers. It is marked by increased cynicism at work, a loss of enjoyment of
our career, and eventually can transform into depression, secondary traumatic stress and
stress-related illnesses. The most insidious aspect of compassion fatigue is that it attacks the
very core of what brought us into this work: our empathy and compassion for others.
Who does it affect?
Compassion fatigue is an occupational hazard, which means that almost everyone who cares
about their patients/clients will eventually develop a certain amount of it, to varying degrees of
severity. Statistics Canada recently published their first ever National Survey of the Work and
Health of Nurses (2005) which found that “close to one-fifth of nurses reported that their
mental health had made their workload difficult to handle during the previous month.” In the
year before the survey, over 50% of nurses had taken time off work because of a physical

illness, and 10% had been away for mental health reasons. Eight out of ten nurses accessed
their EAP (employee assistance program) which is over twice as high as EAP use by the total
employed population. In addition, nurses reported on the job violence and were found “more
likely to experience on the job violence than all other professions.” (ONA, 2006) A study of
Cancer Care Workers in Ontario carried out in 2000 also found high levels of burnout and
stress among oncology workers and discovered that a significant number of them were

Strength-based nursing refers an approach to health care which promotes empowerment, hope, and self-efficacy. This approach acts as a guideline to health delivery for people and families and is at the front position of international reforms in health care and developments in nursing. Health promotion and healing, the third principle aims at ensuring that better care is provided to the patients. The general emphasis of this principle is to ensure that the general outcome in health care is positive. The principle of Collaborative partnership aims at building a strong relationship between the patient, family, community and the professionals. All the parties involved in the partnership share a common goal which is better health care. Innate capacities for health and healing which the last principle of strength based nursing views people as inherently whole. Therefore mental health can be controlled by individuals and that can influence other factors of life such as the behaviour of an individual. While caring for families and the caregivers should also focus on the inner strengths (Castro et al 2016)

The purpose of this study was to analyze a nationally representative sample of families referred
to Child Protective Services (CPS) agencies, the National Survey of Child and Adolescent
Weil-Being, to examine the association between maternal depression and parenting practices
over a 36-month follow-up period.Three hypotheses were tested: (1) Depressed mothers are'
more likely to demonstrate harsh parenting than are nondepressed mothers; (2) depressed
mothers are more likely to demonstrate neglectful parenting than are nondepressed mothers;
and (3) depressed mothers are more likely to demonstrate emotional maltreatment than are
nondepressed mothers. The interaction between depression and time was also analyzed for
each parenting practice to determine how changes in maternal depression affected changes in
parenting. The sample for this study was 1,536 mother-child dyads in which the child was age
three to 10 years and remained in the home after a CPS investigation. Depression remained
high across time points and was associated with increased risk of emotional maltreatment and
neglect over a 36-inonth period. In addition, self-reported emotional maltreatment remained
high across time points. Implications of this work are the needs for better identification of
mental health needs for mothers entering the child welfare system and parent training to
specifically address positive parenting.

health concern, is prevalent among
mothers referred to Child Protective
Services (CPS) agencies. In fact, nearly a quarter of
adults entering the child welfare system meet the
diagnostic criteria for a major depressive episode
in the preceding 12 months (U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services, Administration on
Children.Youth and Families [HHS, ACYF], 2005),
compared with only 7% of adults in the general
population (Kessler, Chiu, Demier, & Walters, 2005).
Furthermore, w ômen have an increased likelihood
of experiencing depression compared with men
(Kessler et al., 2003), and women exposed to a
high number of chronic Stressors—as many women
referred to CPS agencies are—are three times more
likely than women with less exposure to Stressors to
experience maternal depression (Orr,James, Burns,
& Thompson, 1989). Given that women comprise
the vast majority of primary caregivers among the
child welfare population (HHS, ACYF, 2005), it is
important to understand how maternal depression
affects outcomes after a CPS referral.
The high rate of maternal depression in the child
welfare system is a concern given its influence on
parenting practices. Symptoms of depression may
impede a woman's capacity to provide care for her
children, placing her at risk to engage in neglectful

Use as few words as you can to make your statements. This will allow you more room to develop your great ideas!
Avoid repetition and redundancy
of both ideas and words. This is the issue that I usually subtract the most points for, so take care.
For example, when you edit your papers, make sure that you don’t say “Cool Herc is widely accepted as the originator of hip hop”, and then two sentences later, “As Cool Herc is the originator of hip hop…”. See how these two are the same idea? If the reader already has the information, repeating it just takes up space. Another thing to avoid is using the same word multiple times in quick succession. For example: “I found it exciting to listen to the this music. Eri B. has an exciting tone to his voice. When I hear how he flows when he strings words together, I feel excited.” See how ‘excitement’ occurs three times in three sentences? Here’s another more subtle example: “He used the turntable as a way to switch songs seamlessly, using the scratch method to cover up the different beats that were used in each song.” In this example, the word ‘use’ occurs three times in the same sentence! Because it’s a less emotional word, it might be harder to catch, but it’s just as problematic.
I like to see ‘I’ statements.
I find that turning the focus on yourself (especially when we are dealing with sensitive issues and incorporating personal experience, as I encourage) is a great way to avoid generalizing groups and ideas. If your statement is clearly from your perspective, then I as a reader can empathize with your position. If you use lots of ‘we as a generalized group of people act and feel this specific way’, it makes me wonder what research you’ve done, what data points you have, and how many people you have interviewed in order to have that knowledge.
Going off of the previous expectation:
BE SPECIFIC!
If you do make a generalized statement about a situation, back it up with details. Show the research. Reference or quote the authors who initially made the observations and put their work into context. If you tell me that Cool Herc is largely agreed to be the originator of hip hop, tell me why and give examples.
For example, something with detail and context would be: “Although Jamaican soundsystem culture is at the roots of hip hop, Cool Herc was the first to create tracks sourced from James Brown, using the funkier, harder beats that we’ve come to associate with hip hop today.” See how this gives specific details and context on either end of the statement that Cool Herc was the first person to make hip hop?

Registered Nurses, we are aware of the negative consequences
that stress can have on the human body, both physically and
mentally. Burnout can progressively deteriorate the quality of a
nurse’s life, both personally and professionally. Burnout is an
occupational hazard (O’Mahony, 2011). As members of this
2. rewarding yet stressful profession, we feel compelled to educate
other nurses on how to prevent, identify, and treat burnout. On
_______, our group visited _______. Our evaluation of the
information presented led us to believe that this group of
professionals is more aware of the risk factors for nurse burnout
and that they will apply this new education in their everyday
lives.
Enhanced Academic Learning
Our objectives for this ASL experience are: 3.7 Describe a
workplace problem requiring managerial intervention in a select
healthcare setting and 3.8 Demonstrate independent and
interdependent decision-making strategies to improve the select
problem. Nurses enter the field of nursing with enthusiasm and
a desire to do good for those who are, physically, mentally,
emotionally, and spiritually ill. However, nurses may become
overwhelmed due to the many demands of the patient, the
family, and the organization. Burnout leads to emotional and
physical exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal
accomplishment (O’Mahony, 2011). Applying Dorothy Orem’s
Self-Care and Self -Care Deficit nursing theory, any individual
who is unable perform or practice activities needed to maintain
health and well-being, structural integrity, human functioning
and human development is compromised and attention is
urgently needed (Coldwell Foster, 2011). The impact of burnout
on nurses can be profound. Consequences include low morale,
increased absenteeism due to sickness, decreased effectiveness
and productivity, poorer job performance and patient care, and
higher staff attrition and turnover (O’Mahony, 2011). Even
though the profession of nursing is centered on caring for the
patient, it should not be at the expense of the nurse’s own
health. Nurses need to be aware of impending burnout, its signs
and symptoms as well as preventive measure.
Purposeful Civic Learning
We understand the devastating toll burnout can have on a
nurse’s physical, psychological, and working relationships.
Nurses are the cornerstones of healthcare. When he or she
3. experiences burnout, the profession and also the health and
wellness of patients are affected. A nurse may miss changes in
patient status due to fatigue and burnout (O’Mahony, 2011).
Nurses tend to be selfless caregivers; we overlook our
emotional and physical needs in place of others. On any given
day, a nurse can experience the highs of helping a mother with
the birth of a child and the lows of comforting the sick and
dying. This service-learning project focuses on teaching nurse
leaders the signs of nurse burnout and resolutions to help
combat this growing problem.
Purposeful Reflection
Before our presentation, it was our belief that compared to
nurses that work directly with the patients on the unit, nurse
leaders had a lower risk of developing work-related stress. What
we actually learned is that stress does not discriminate, that it
can grab a hold of anyone. Studies reveal that nurse leaders tend
to undergo higher levels of stress and are at increased risk of
burnout. Like other nurses on the unit, work related activities
such as dealing with complex or difficult patients, lack of time
to complete tasks, and group-work are some of the main
stressors and reason for burnout (O’Mahony, 2011). After our
presentation, we all came to a consensus that this experience
has opened our eyes as to how much more responsibilities a
nurse acquires when he or she takes on the title of a leader or a
manager. It changed our view on how we perceived the role of a
nurse manager and how we would cope with the stressors of
being a nurse leader when and if we decide to take on the
responsibilities that come with such a title.
Critical Thinking
As BSN students, our group initially felt inadequate and
intimidated by the thought of teaching nurses in leadership and
management positions who are more educated than us. However,
we critically thought about it and prepared for our challenge.
We read scholarly literature on the topic, shared it with each
other, and rehearsed our presentation to become knowledgeable
about the topic and confident in our approach. We also
4. anticipated potential questions the audience may ask. We began
to look at the situation simply as a valuable teaching
opportunity, not a mountain to climb.
