Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins and can be classified in several ways. They can be classified based on their structure as non-essential or essential amino acids, with non-essential amino acids able to be synthesized in the body and essential amino acids needing to come from dietary sources. Amino acids are also commonly classified based on their polarity as nonpolar, polar, or charged.
